Chapter 6 - The Shadow Falls

The peace of the afternoon was shattered at 4:00 PM when Marco burst into Daario’s study without knocking.

"Boss, we have a breach," Marco said, his face grim. "Not at the house. At the shelter."

Margaret stood up from the sofa instantly, her heart sinking. "St. Catherine’s?"

"Julian Falcone just sent a team of armed men to St. Catherine’s," Marco explained rapidly, checking a tablet in his hand. "They took the staff hostage. They think Sophia is still hidden somewhere in the building’s secure basement."

"No!" Margaret gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "There are twenty-two children currently in that building! And my staff!"

Daario rose from behind his desk like a dark storm cloud rising over the horizon. The tenderness he had shown just an hour earlier vanished entirely, replaced by the lethal authority of a Don whose territory had been violated.

"How many men?" Daario demanded coldly.

"Eight heavily armed mercenaries," Marco replied. "Led by Falcone’s chief lieutenant, a man named Russo. They've barricaded the doors and set a thirty-minute timer. They're demanding we bring Sophia to the shelter in exchange for the children."

"He’s using innocent children as human shields," Margaret cried out, terror gripping her chest. "Daario, we have to call the SWAT team!"

"If SWAT moves in, Russo will start executing hostages before the police breach the lobby," Daario said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Falcone wants a war. He wants to drag me out into the open."

"Then what do we do?" Margaret pleaded, grabbing his forearm. "We can't trade Sophia! But we can't let those children die!"

Daario placed his hand over hers, squeezing it tightly. "Nobody is trading Sophia. And no harm will come to those children. Marco, prepare the tactical transport. Call the perimeter squad. We are going to St. Catherine’s."

"Daario, I'm coming with you," Margaret stated firmly.

"No," Daario refused instantly. "It’s a kill zone, Margaret. You stay here with Sophia."

"I know the layout of that building better than anyone alive!" Margaret argued, her eyes blazing with fierce determination. "I know the hidden maintenance tunnels, the fire exits, and where the children are kept during lockdown procedures! If you go in blind, you risk firing into rooms where children are hiding! You need me!"

Daario stared at her, looking for any trace of hesitation or fear in her eyes. He found none—only the ferocious bravery of a woman who would walk into hell itself to save those under her care.

"Marco," Daario commanded, his tone sharp. "Get her a tactical vest."

Ten minutes later, an armored black convoy tore out of the estate gates, speeding toward the inner city.

Inside the lead vehicle, Daario personally buckled Margaret into a lightweight kevlar vest beneath her coat. His hands were meticulous, ensuring every strap was tight and secure.

"You stay behind me at all times," Daario ordered, looking deeply into her eyes. "If I tell you to drop, you drop. Do you understand me?"

"I understand," Margaret nodded, her breath shallow but steady.

Daario reached into his coat and pulled out a small, compact 9mm handgun. He placed it directly into her hands, closing her fingers around the grip.

"Safety is off," Daario instructed softly. "If anyone in a black tactical uniform comes through a door and I am not between you and them, you pull this trigger. Point for the center of the chest."

Margaret looked down at the heavy steel weapon in her hands. She had spent her entire life opposing violence in all its forms. But as she thought of the terrified children at St. Catherine’s, her grip tightened around the handle.

"I will," she said clearly.

Daario looked at her, a fierce pride burning in his eyes. He leaned forward, pressing his lips firmly against hers in a brief, hard, passionate kiss that tasted of promise and adrenaline.

"Keep your head down, my brave director," Daario whispered against her lips. "Let's go take back your shelter."
