Chapter 2 - The Shadow Circle

The black SUV roared through the storm-slicked streets of Chicago, cutting through the neon reflection of Pilsen and speeding toward an undisclosed safehouse in the industrial outskirts of the city. Clara sat in the rear leather seat, wrapped in Gabriel’s heavy wool coat, her face pale against the dark upholstery.
Gabriel sat beside her, his fingers lightly brushing her knuckles, though he refrained from touching her fully, respecting the fear that still lingered in her eyes. Front-seat lieutenant Dorian Shaw kept his eyes glued to the rearview mirror, his hands white-knuckled on the steering wheel.
"The perimeter at Pilsen was breached within five minutes of your arrival, Boss," Dorian reported, his voice raspy. "Someone leaked your coordinates the moment you stepped into that building."
"It wasn't a leak," Gabriel said smoothly, his eyes scanning the passing streets. "It was a blueprint. Someone wanted me to find Clara, kill her in a fit of rage, and then get taken down by Bell’s snipers outside. A clean sweep. The traitor gets the organization, Bell gets the territory, and I take the blame for murdering the woman I loved."
Clara looked up, her breathing steadying as the warmth of the heater filled the vehicle. "Gabriel... who had access to your ring?"
"Only three people," Gabriel said, his voice dropping an octave. "Dorian, my chief financial officer Marcus Vance, and my cousin Julian. After the Fulton Market attack, I was told the ring was lost in the fire."
Dorian’s eyes met Gabriel’s in the rearview mirror. "You think one of us betrayed you?"
"I don't think, Dorian. I know facts," Gabriel stated coldly. "And the fact is, Clara was targeted by someone who knew my private routes, my personal accounts, and had access to my family crest."
Clara touched her abdomen as a sudden, sharp contraction rippled through her body. She winced softly, letting out a small gasp.
Gabriel immediately turned to her, his sharp demeanor melting into pure concern. "Clara? What's wrong?"
"It's... it's just a contraction," she whispered, sweating despite the chill outside. "Braxton Hicks, hopefully. But the stress... the movement... it's triggering them."
"How far along are you?" Gabriel asked, his hand coming to rest near hers on the seat.
"Thirty-four weeks," Clara answered, looking deep into his eyes. "Eight months, Gabriel. Exactly eight months since the night I was thrown into the river."
The math struck Gabriel like a physical blow. The child she carried was his. The legacy he thought was buried under blood and vengeance was alive, growing beneath the thick sweater, endangered by the very war he had been waging.
"Dorian, change of course," Gabriel commanded sharply. "We aren't going to the lakefront house. Drive to the old estate in Lake Forest. The medical suite on the ground floor is fully stocked."
"Boss, Lake Forest hasn't been swept in weeks," Dorian warned. "If there's a mole—"
May you like
"Then let them come," Gabriel interrupted, his gaze fixed on Clara’s pale face. "I am done playing defense. Tonight, we find out who sold us out, and I will tear down every block in Chicago until my family is safe."
The SUV veered off the highway, disappearing into the dark, rain-soaked pine woods leading toward Lake Forest.
