Chapter 6 - The Broken Sanctuary

The silence that followed the battle was heavy and profound. The police sirens were still miles away, delayed by the storm and the private security protocols Gabriel’s team had executed.
Gabriel rushed back to the medical suite, his heart hammering against his ribs until he saw Clara sitting safely inside the opened safe room, wrapped in a warm blanket, with Dr. Evans monitoring her vitals.
When she saw Gabriel enter—soaked in rain, splattered with mud, but unharmed—she let out a ragged breath she seemed to have been holding for hours.
"It's over," Gabriel said, kneeling beside her chair. He took off his wet jacket and dropped it to the floor, reaching out to cup her face with warm, trembling hands. "It's all over, Clara. Bell is taken care of. Marcus is in custody. They will never touch you again."
Clara looked at him, searching his face for the ruthless crime boss she had feared in Pilsen. All she found was the man who used to make terrible pasta in his lakefront apartment, the man whose eyes softened whenever she smiled.
"What happens now, Gabriel?" she asked softly, touching his wrist. "The police will come. Your world... it's falling apart."
"I'm tearing it down myself," he replied firmly. "I turned over the ledgers. I gave the authorities everything they need to dismantle the syndicate. I'm stepping away, Clara. I'm done."
Before Clara could answer, a sharp, gasping pain seized her abdomen. She gripped Gabriel’s arm tightly, her face turning pale as she leaned forward.
"Gabriel..." she gasped, her voice tight with agony. "The baby... it's time."
Dr. Evans immediately stepped forward, checking the monitors. "The stress of the night has triggered full labor. Her blood pressure is spiking, and given the scar tissue from her previous injury, we cannot wait for an ambulance. We have to deliver this baby right now, right here."
Gabriel’s composure shattered into sheer panic. He had faced down rival cartels, federal indictments, and armed ambushes without flinching, but the thought of losing Clara or their child in a emergency delivery terrified him to his core.
"Tell me what to do," Gabriel demanded, looking at Dr. Evans with absolute urgency. "Tell me what you need!"
"Hold her hand," Dr. Evans said calmly, preparing the sterile equipment. "Keep her focused. That is the only job you have right now, Gabriel."

Gabriel moved closer, pulling Clara into his arms, letting her rest her head against his chest as the first major contraction shook her frame.
"I'm here," he whispered into her hair, his tears finally breaking through his hard exterior. "I'm right here, Clara. I won't leave you again. I promise."
