Chapter 7 - A Fragile New Dawn

The rain stopped just as the first amber rays of dawn began to break over Lake Michigan.
Inside the quiet medical bay of the Lake Forest estate, the tense, agonizing hours of labor culminated in a soft, clear cry that shattered the stillness of the morning.
Dr. Evans carefully wrapped the newborn in a warm flannel blanket and turned toward the exhausted couple. "It's a girl," he said softly, a gentle smile appearing on his face. "She's small, but her lungs are strong. She's healthy."
Gabriel stared in awe as Dr. Evans placed the tiny bundle into Clara’s arms.
Clara lay back against the pillows, her hair damp with sweat, her face pale but glowing with a radiant, unyielding love. She looked down at the tiny baby girl, who had dark, thick hair just like her father's, and delicate, soft features.
Gabriel dropped to his knees beside the bed. Slowly, reverently, he extended a calloused finger. The tiny baby opened her hand and wrapped her miniature fingers around his thumb, holding on with surprising strength.
The man who had ruled Chicago’s underground with an iron fist broke down into silent, heavy sobs, his forehead resting against Clara’s knee as he wept for the years lost, the blood spilled, and the miracle resting in her arms.
"Look at her, Gabriel," Clara whispered, her eyes shining with tears. "She survived everything. Just like us."
"What... what should we name her?" Gabriel asked, his voice rough with emotion as he looked up at Clara.
Clara smiled softly, touching the baby’s tiny cheek. "Grace. Her name is Grace."
"Grace Russo," Gabriel repeated softly, the name feeling like a blessing on his tongue.
The tranquility was interrupted by the muted sound of approaching police cruisers. Red and blue lights flashed through the high windows, painting the walls of the room in rhythmic color.
Dorian stepped into the room, his expression somber. "Gabriel. The federal agents are outside. U.S. Attorneys are with them. They're here for the surrender."
Gabriel nodded slowly. He leaned down and kissed Clara’s forehead, then leaned lower to gently press his lips against tiny Grace’s head.
"I have to pay for what I've done, Clara," Gabriel said softly. "The financial crimes, the years before I met you... I have to make it clean so she never has to hide who her father is."
"How long?" Clara asked, her voice trembling as she gripped his hand tightly.
"My lawyers worked out a plea deal in exchange for turning over Bell and the entire syndicate ledger," Gabriel explained, staring into her eyes. "Three years in a minimum-security facility. Maybe less with good behavior."

Clara felt a tear slip down her cheek, but she nodded bravely. "Three years is nothing compared to forever. We’ll be waiting for you, Gabriel."
Gabriel stood up, straightened his shirt, and stepped out to face the law, leaving his past behind him once and for all.
