Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House

The metallic click of handcuffs echoed across the quiet neighborhood.

Neighbours pulled out their phones, recording the scene as police officers forced Marcus and Olivia’s hands behind their backs. Marcus was sobbing, his previous arrogance entirely crushed under the sheer weight of federal authority.

"Amelia! Please!" Marcus screamed as he was pulled down the steps toward a waiting police cruiser. "Look at me! We have children! We have twins! Think of Noah and Lily!"

I stood at the top of the porch, looking down at him without a shred of emotion.

"You didn't think of Noah and Lily when you left me in the delivery room alone," I said, my voice carrying over the crowd. "You didn't think of them when you dropped divorce papers on my hospital bed and told me I was useless. You forfeited your right to be called their father the moment you traded them for a criminal."

"Amelia!" Helen dropped to her knees on the porch, weeping uncontrollably, clutching at the hem of my military trousers. "Please... spared Marcus! He was foolish! He was manipulated by that horrible woman! Don't let them take my son!"

Robert Vale stood frozen behind her, his hands trembling violently. The proud man who had spent months ignoring my presence at family dinners, praising Olivia’s intellect and beauty, now looked like a shell.

"Get up, Helen," I said quietly, stepping back so she couldn't touch me.

"Where... where are we supposed to go?" Robert rasped, his voice barely a whisper. "If the house belongs to you... what happens to us?"

"You have twenty-four hours to pack your personal belongings," I stated coldly. "Tomorrow at noon, Vanguard Sentinel LLC takes full physical possession of the property. My property management team will padlock the gates."

"Amelia... we are your family!" Helen wailed.

"You were Marcus's family," I corrected her. "You never treated me as yours. You laughed when he demeaned me. You celebrated the woman who was helping him destroy my marriage. You enjoyed the comfort of a house saved by my money while letting me sit in a hospital room praying my babies would survive the night."

I turned to General Vance. "Sir, the scene is clear. I’m ready to return to base."

"Understood, Colonel," Vance replied, raising his hand in a crisp salute. "MP detail, secure the perimeter until local authorities finish seizing the electronic evidence."

As the police cruisers pulled away with their sirens blaring, carrying Marcus and Olivia into federal custody, I walked down the driveway toward my command SUV. Inside the rear seat, two secure baby travel systems were fitted safely, where my military nanny was softly humming to Noah and Lily.

I looked at my children through the window. Their little eyes were closed, resting peacefully.

The battle for their future had begun, but the Vales had already lost.
