Chapter 4 - The Eviction

At 11:30 AM, three heavy transport trucks belonging to Vanguard Security parked outside the Vale residence.
I stood near the entrance of the driveway alongside my private civil attorney, Arthur Vance. Helen and Robert Vale were sitting on the front porch steps surrounded by half-packed cardboard boxes and taped suitcases. They looked defeated, worn down by twenty-four hours of non-stop news coverage detailing their son's arrest for federal financial crimes.
Local news vans were parked down the street, cameras zoomed in on the fallen prominent family.
Helen saw me walk up and stood up shakily. "Amelia... please. Look at these reporters. They are ruining our family name! Can't you tell them it was all a mistake? Can't you give us a few more weeks?"
"Your family name was ruined by your son's greed and your own enabling cruelty, Helen," I said, standing tall in my casual service uniform. "You spent years looking down on me because I didn't come from old Connecticut money. You called my military career 'unfortunate low-level civil service' while accepting the housing security I provided."
Robert stepped forward, his head bowed. "Amelia... we didn't know. If we had known you were a colonel... if we had known you bought the house..."
"That's the most tragic part, Robert," I interrupted, looking him dead in the eye. "You only care now because you know my rank and my net worth. If I were still just 'Amelia the quiet office worker,' you would have cheered as Marcus kicked me to the curb with newborn twins. You don't regret how you treated me. You only regret that I had the power to punish you for it."
Arthur Vance stepped forward, holding a clipboard. "Mr. and Mrs. Vale, as of 12:00 PM, your license to occupy this premises is officially revoked. Movers will load your personal belongings into those trucks. They will be delivered to a secure storage unit in East Hartford. The first month's rent has been paid as an act of court-ordered courtesy by Mrs. Brooks. After that, you are on your own."
"Storage unit?" Helen shrieked. "Where are we supposed to sleep tonight?!"
"There is a residential motel two miles down the highway," Arthur replied coldly. "I suggest you use the remaining balance in your personal checking account to book a room."
Two security officers stepped past them, placing official 'NO TRESPASSING - PROPERTY OF VANGUARD SENTINEL LLC' signs onto the front lawn and front door.
Helen sank back onto the wooden steps, weeping into her hands, while Robert quietly picked up two small suitcases and began walking down the driveway toward a modest taxi that had just pulled up.
As I watched them leave, my phone chimed. It was a encrypted message from my base communications officer:
Colonel Brooks, priority orders from Pentagon Command. Deployment review cleared. You are officially reassigned as Senior Director of Regional Intelligence Operations at Fort Devens.

I closed my phone, took one last look at the house that had caused so much pain, and turned toward my car.
The past was officially closed. The future belonged to my children.
