Chapter 7 - The Promotion

Eighteen months later.
The summer heat shone brightly over the parade grounds at Fort Devens. Hundreds of soldiers stood in flawless, rigid formation under the clear blue sky, flags snapping in the warm breeze.
A military brass band played softly in the background as senior military officials, dignitaries, and federal executives filled the grandstands.
In the front row of the VIP box sat my mother, holding two-year-old Noah and Lily, who were dressed in adorable little matching formal outfits.
Standing on the central podium was General Vance alongside the Under Secretary of the Army.
"Attention to Orders!" the loud speaker echoed across the field. "The President of the United States, reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of Amelia Brooks, does hereby promote her to the rank of Brigadier General, United States Army."
The crowd erupted into resounding applause.
I stepped forward to the center of the stage, executing a sharp salute to the Under Secretary. My mother walked up the steps carrying Noah and Lily, accompanied by General Vance.
Together, my mother and General Vance pinned the bright, silver stars onto the shoulders of my dress uniform.
Noah pointed his tiny finger at the silver star on my shoulder, letting out a loud, proud giggle. "Mommy star!"
The entire audience laughed warmly, breaking the rigid military protocol for a brief, magical moment.
I picked up Noah in my left arm and held Lily’s hand with my right, looking out over the field of soldiers saluting toward the stage.

I was no longer just a survivor of a broken marriage. I was no longer the quiet woman who stayed silent while others stole her credit.
I was a General in the United States Army, a mother of two wonderful children, and the commander of my own destiny.
