Chapter 14 - An Unholy Alliance

Mark stood on the porch, his coat drenched in a sudden light rain that had begun to fall over the ridge. His dark hair was plastered to his forehead, and his expression was a volatile mix of arrogance and desperation.

Hannah unlocked the heavy oak door but kept the brass security chain attached.

"Mark," she said coldly through the three-inch gap. "You're trespassing."

"Hannah, open the door," Mark said, pushing his hand against the wood. "We need to talk. Your father just called my father. The entire deal is collapsing. The bank froze our joint credit lines an hour ago!"

"That has nothing to do with me," Hannah replied. "You and my father made business deals behind closed doors. Now you can handle the consequences."

"It has everything to do with you!" Mark yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. "You think you're so innocent up here in your cute little cottage playing gardener? You're ruining lives, Hannah! My family’s firm stands to lose twenty million dollars if that Delaware trust stays frozen!"

"And what did I lose, Mark?" Hannah asked, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "I lost five years of my life to a marriage built on a financial transaction. I lost my self-respect trying to make a monster love me. You and my father used me as collateral."

Mark stopped pushing against the door. His face darkened. "You think your grandmother was protecting you? She was a bitter old woman who hated my family because my grandfather outsmarted her in nineties real estate. She used you as a pawn to hit back at us from beyond the grave!"

"She gave me my life back," Hannah said firmly.

"If you don't release those voting shares by Friday," Mark warned, leaning in close so his eye was visible through the gap, "my father and Arthur are going to file a joint civil lawsuit alleging you and June committed trust fraud. They will drag your name through every media outlet in the state. They will destroy your new business, your reputation, and this precious little sanctuary."

Hannah looked at the man she had once promised to love forever. She saw no strength in him, no honor—only the terrified rage of a weak man whose safety net had been yanked away.

"Let them try," Hannah said quietly.

She slammed the door shut, slid the heavy deadbolt into place, and locked out his demands.
