Chapter 18 - The Legal Showdown

Four days later, the regional chancery courtroom was packed to capacity. Reporters from three major news outlets sat in the back rows, drawn by rumors of a high-stakes corporate collapse within one of the state's most prominent real estate dynasties.

At the plaintiff’s table sat Arthur Sterling, Richard Vance, and their team of elite corporate attorneys. They looked formidable, backed by stacks of leather-bound binders and aggressive motions to freeze the Delaware trust.

At the defense table sat Hannah, accompanied by Caleb and a young, brilliant estate attorney named Sarah Lin, whom Caleb had recommended.

The judge, a formidable woman named Justice Vance (no relation to Julian or Caleb), slammed her gavel down to bring the court to order.

"We are here to consider the motion for an emergency injunction against the June Sterling Delaware Revocable Trust," Justice Vance announced, eyeing the room. "Plaintiff claims the codicil filed six months ago was executed under undue influence during the late June Sterling's period of illness."

Arthur’s lead attorney stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, June Sterling was ninety-two years old when this alleged codicil was signed. She was isolated at her rural property, heavily medicated, and influenced by her granddaughter, who sought to leverage family assets following her divorce."

Hannah held her head high, keeping her eyes fixed on the judge. She refused to look down.

Sarah Lin stood up calmly. "Your Honor, if it pleases the court, we would like to submit Exhibit A: A video deposition recorded by June Sterling three days before her passing, certified by an independent neurologist and two independent witnesses."

A murmur rippled through the courtroom.

Arthur straightened up in his chair, his eyes wide. He hadn't known a video existed.

Sarah tapped a button on her laptop. A large flat-screen monitor mounted on the courtroom wall flickered to life.

Grandma June appeared on the screen. She sat in the very same porch swing where Hannah now drank her morning tea, wearing her favorite lavender cardigan. Her eyes were sharp, bright, and completely lucid.

"If you are watching this," June’s voice echoed clearly through the silent courtroom, "it means my son, Arthur, has done exactly what I prayed he would not do. It means he has tried to strip my granddaughter of her dignity and sell off the valley land to cover his own illegal financial gambles."

June leaned forward into the camera lens, her expression stern and commanding.

"I am of sound mind and body," June continued. "I executed this codicil deliberately. I left the valley land to Hannah because she is the only person in this family who understands that land, love, and loyalty are not assets to be traded on a balance sheet. Arthur, if you are sitting in that court today: your reign is over. Let my granddaughter go."

The video faded to black.

The courtroom remained in absolute, stunned silence for three full seconds before chaos broke out.
