Chapter 19 - The Reckoning
Justice Vance slammed her gavel repeatedly until order was restored.
"The motion for an emergency injunction is denied," Justice Vance ruled firmly. "Furthermore, based on the evidence submitted alongside this deposition regarding potential trust fraud and environmental forgery, this court orders an immediate freeze on all commercial accounts associated with the Sterling-Vance Development Group pending a federal grand jury investigation."
Arthur slumped back into his leather chair, staring blankly at the dark monitor screen. Besiide him, Richard Vance buried his face in his hands as federal agents—who had been quietly waiting in the back of the room—stepped forward to execute warrants for financial fraud and environmental falsification.
As the courtroom cleared, Hannah walked slowly out into the marble hallway.
Arthur was led past her, escorted by his legal team and two state investigators. He paused for a brief second as he passed his daughter.
"Hannah," he whispered, his voice trembling. "What am I supposed to do now?"
Hannah looked at him, feeling the final lingering threads of past grief release their grip on her heart.
"You start telling the truth, Dad," she said gently. "It’s the only thing left you have."
He didn't answer. He was led down the hall, his footsteps echoing into the vast, empty space.
Outside on the courthouse steps, the afternoon sun broke through the clouds, illuminating the town below. Julian Vance stepped out of the doors behind her, handing her a final set of signed legal documents.
"The Delaware trust is fully transferred to your name, Hannah," Julian said, offering a genuine, tired smile. "Your father's firm has dissolved its development project. The watershed is protected permanently."

"Thank you, Julian," Hannah said.
"Don't thank me," Julian said, looking back at his younger brother Caleb, who was walking up the steps holding two paper cups of tea. "Thank your grandmother. And thank yourself for having the courage to stand up when everyone else stayed quiet."
