Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Prodigal Director

The headquarters of Vance-Sterling Construction was a glass-and-steel monolith in the city's financial district. At 8:30 the following morning, Daniel rushed through the lobby, his hair slightly disheveled, his navy suit creased from a night of sleepless tossing and turning.
He took the private elevator directly to the executive floor, his mind racing with damage control strategies. He needed to talk to the chief financial officer, liquidate personal assets, and force Claire into a settlement before the board members panicked.
When the elevator doors slid open, however, he was met not with the usual quiet efficiency of the morning staff, but with chaos.
Two federal agents in dark suits stood outside his corner office, accompanied by three internal compliance auditors. Employees were hovering near their cubicles, whispering behind hand-held documents.
"What is the meaning of this?" Daniel demanded, stepping forward with projected bravado. "Who authorized you to be on this floor?"
"I did," a commanding voice called out.
From the primary conference room walked Arthur Sterling, the board chairman and a lifelong friend of Claire’s late father. Arthur was seventy years old, with sharp blue eyes that had seen every corporate maneuver imaginable.
"Arthur," Daniel breathed out, forcing a smile. "Thank God you’re here. Claire has lost her mind. She’s frozen our personal accounts and filed some ridiculous—"
"Save it, Daniel," Arthur interrupted coldly, handing him a thick blue folder. "The emergency audit requested by Claire’s legal team was completed at four this morning. Our forensic accountants pulled the ledger entries for 'Vance Logistics LLC'—the vendor you personally approved for six major municipal projects."
Daniel’s blood ran cold. "Arthur, those were legitimate sub-contracting fees—"
"Vance Logistics LLC is registered to Liam Cole—Vanessa Cole’s brother," Arthur said, his voice echoing through the silent corridor. "A man who owns no construction equipment, employs zero workers, and operates out of a mail drop box in Delaware. You routed three point two million dollars of company capital into his account over eighteen months."
Vanessa Cole walked out of her corner office at that exact moment, holding a leather designer bag. When she saw the federal agents and Arthur Sterling, her face drained of all color.
"Daniel... what’s going on?" Vanessa asked, her voice trembling. "Why are security officers going through my desk?"
Daniel turned on her, his desperation spilling over into rage. "Did you tell your brother to move those funds like I asked last week?!"
"Don't yell at me!" Vanessa snapped, stepping back. "You said Claire wouldn't notice! You told me she was just a clueless housewife who didn't even read the bank statements!"
"Silence! Both of you!" Arthur barked. He turned to the two federal agents. "Agents, this is Daniel Sterling, Chief Executive Officer, and Vanessa Cole, Marketing Director. The board has formally voted to suspend their executive powers, terminate their contracts for gross misconduct, and cooperate fully with your investigation."
The lead agent stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Daniel Sterling, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy."

As the cold steel locked around Daniel’s wrists in front of his entire workforce, his gaze fell upon the glass walls of the lobby. Standing near the elevators, wearing a sharp cream suit and flanked by her attorney, was Claire.
She didn't gloat. She didn't wave. She simply watched him with calm, absolute detachment as the agents led him away, his empire crumbling into dust before nine in the morning.
