Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Vanessa

While Daniel adjusted to the bleak routines of federal custody, Vanessa Cole found that her plea deal was far from a golden ticket back to her high-flying lifestyle.

Although she had avoided prison time by turning state’s evidence, her professional reputation in the corporate marketing world was completely obliterated. News of her involvement in the kickback scheme and the bribery photos with Marcus Vale had made the front pages of every regional business journal.

Sitting in a cramped, two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city—a far cry from her luxury downtown loft—Vanessa stared at her laptop screen in despair.

She had applied for over thirty marketing positions across five states over the past month. Every single application had been rejected within hours. The corporate world is small, and no executive wanted to hire a woman who had helped embezzle millions from her employer and then cut a deal with the feds to save herself.

Her phone rang on the glass coffee table.

She snatched it up, hoping it was a recruiter. "Hello?"

"Vanessa Cole?" a sharp, formal voice spoke through the speaker.

"Yes, speaking!"

"This is the legal representative for Vance-Sterling Construction. I am calling to inform you that a civil recovery lawsuit has been filed against you personally in state court by CEO Claire Bennett."

Vanessa’s heart dropped into her stomach. "A lawsuit?! I signed a plea deal with the government! I have immunity!"

"You have criminal immunity from federal prosecutors, Ms. Cole," the lawyer explained coldly. "You do not have immunity from civil damages. We are suing you for the recovery of one point eight million dollars in corporate funds that were used to purchase your personal luxury items, apartment leases, and vehicles over the last eighteen months."

"I don't have that kind of money!" Vanessa screamed into the phone. "Daniel spent that money! Not me!"

"The paper trail proves that the funds were deposited directly into your private accounts and shell company," the lawyer countered without emotion. "We have obtained an emergency court order freezing your bank accounts and placing a lien on your personal belongings, effective as of twelve o'clock today. Good day, Ms. Cole."

The line went dead.

Vanessa dropped the phone onto the couch, tears of rage and panic streaming down her face. She looked around her apartment at her designer shoes, her luxury handbags, and her custom jewelry—all of it bought with money stolen from Claire’s family legacy.

In her vanity, Vanessa had believed that youth and charm gave her power over a quiet housewife. She had laughed at Claire, mockingly declaring that Claire had nowhere to go.

Now, Claire sat in the corner office running a multi-million dollar corporation, while Vanessa was left with nothing—no career, no money, no allies, and a mountain of legal debt that would follow her for the rest of her life.
