Chapter 3 - The Cold Reality

Forty-eight hours after his arrest, Daniel sat in a stark, windowless visiting room at the city detention facility. The bright fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting harsh shadows across his sunken eyes and stubbled jaw. His high-priced criminal defense lawyer, Robert Vance (no relation to Marcus Vance), sat beside him with a grim expression.
The heavy steel door buzzed and swung open.
Daniel sat up straight, expecting to see his mother or perhaps Vanessa. Instead, Margaret Cole—Daniel’s mother—walked in, clutching a faded leather handbag to her chest. Her eyes were red-rimmed, and she looked frail.
"Mom," Daniel exhaled, leaning across the metal table. "Did you post the bail? Did you call the bail bondsman like I asked?"
Margaret looked at her son with a mix of sorrow and deep disappointment. "The judge set bail at two million dollars, Daniel. The court considers you a flight risk because of the offshore accounts."
"Two million?!" Daniel shouted, clutching his hair. "I can raise that! Sell the sports car! Liquidation of the Arlington condo! Draw from our personal reserves!"
"The Arlington condo was purchased using money from your joint account with Claire," lawyer Robert Vance interjected calmly. "Claire’s legal team filed a lis pendens notice yesterday. The property is tied up in the divorce proceedings and cannot be sold or mortgaged. Furthermore, all your personal credit cards have been revoked by the issuers."
"What about Vanessa?" Daniel asked frantically. "Her brother has the Delaware accounts! Tell him to wire the cash for the bail!"
Margaret let out a dry, weeping laugh. "Vanessa was released on a signature bond yesterday morning, Daniel. She signed a proffer agreement with the federal prosecutors. She’s testifying against you and her brother in exchange for immunity."
Daniel froze, staring at his mother as if he hadn't understood the words. "She... she what?"
"She gave them everything," Robert Vance confirmed, opening his briefcase. "Text messages, emails, voice notes where you promised to route construction contracts to her brother in exchange for kickbacks. She’s turned full state's evidence. You are facing up to fifteen years in federal prison, Daniel."
Daniel felt the room spin around him. The woman he had lavished with diamonds, trips to St. Barts, and luxury apartments had abandoned him at the first sight of a plea bargain. The woman he had dismissed as a weak, helpless housewife had calculated his absolute ruin down to the dollar and the hour.
"Where is Claire?" Daniel whimpered, his voice cracking. "Where is my son?"
"Claire has taken Noah to her family’s estate in upstate New York," Margaret said quietly. "She called me yesterday, Daniel. She didn't scream. She didn't brag. She just told me that Noah is safe, that he will be cared for, and that she has established a private trust for his education that you can never touch."
Margaret stood up slowly, wrapping her cardigan tightly around herself.
"You had everything, Daniel," Margaret whispered, tears spilling down her withered cheeks. "A brilliant wife who sacrificed her career for your family, a handsome son, and a prosperous company. You threw it all away for a woman who sold you out in twenty-four hours."

"Mom, don't leave!" Daniel cried as his mother turned toward the door. "Help me!"
"I can't help you, Daniel," Margaret said without looking back. "You made your bed. Now you have to lie in it."
