Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Harbor

The morning fog rolled off Boston Harbor, wrapping the stone walls of the Romano estate in a damp, gray shroud. Inside the vast country kitchen, Claire Dawson moved like a ghost, scrubbing the marble countertops while her mind raced with panic.

She had survived two years of scrubbing floors in high-security mob estates across New England by following one ironclad rule: Be invisible.

Yet, yesterday afternoon, her daughter had marched straight into the inner sanctum of Vincent Romano—a man rumored to have dissolved bodies in acid and overthrown rival syndicates before breakfast—and handed him a butterfly hairbrush.

He didn't fire me, Claire reminded herself for the hundredth time, her hands trembling as she rinsed a porcelain plate. He told me to stay.

"Mommy?"

Claire spun around. Rosie stood in the doorway of the kitchen, rubbing her eyes, wearing her pink socks and clutching a small stuffed rabbit.

"Sweetheart," Claire whispered, kneeling down and pulling her close. "You scared me half to death yesterday. You can never, ever go into the main office again. Do you understand?"

Rosie tilted her head, her dark eyes wide and innocent. "Why? Mr. Vincent was nice. He fixed my hair."

"He's a very busy man, Rosie. People like him... they don't like being bothered."

"He looked sad," Rosie said simply. "Just like you when Daddy went away."

Claire’s breath caught in her throat. The memory of an abusive, gambling-addicted ex-husband who had abandoned them two years ago flashed through her mind. She pulled Rosie tighter, blinking back sudden tears. "We don't talk about him, angel. We're safe here. As long as we follow the rules."

"Can I go see the flowers in the garden?"

"Only if you stay near the fountain," Claire cautioned. "And don't talk to the men in the black suits."

As Rosie scampered toward the glass doors leading to the courtyard, the kitchen heavy door swung open. Grant Keller walked in, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. His sharp eyes scanned the room before resting on Claire.

"Mrs. Dawson," Grant greeted, his tone professional.

Claire straightened immediately, wiping her hands on her apron. "Mr. Keller. I assure you, Rosie won't wander into the main house again. I've made it clear—"

"Relax, Claire," Grant interrupted, taking a sip of coffee. "The boss gave specific instructions this morning."

Claire froze. "What kind of instructions?"

"Your daughter's safety is now a priority of the estate detail. Two men have been assigned to monitor the courtyard perimeter. And..." Grant paused, a faint smile touching his lips. "...the boss ordered the estate chef to include organic fruit preserves and pastries for the staff quarters. Specifically for breakfast."

Claire stared at him in utter disbelief. Vincent Romano, a man whose heart was said to be carved from frozen granite, was ordering gourmet pastries for a four-year-old girl who had invaded his private office?

"I don't understand," Claire breathed.

"Neither do I," Grant muttered, setting his mug down. "Just keep doing your job, Claire. And keep that little girl smiling. It’s the only armor this house has left."
