Chapter 9 - The Threshold of Tomorrow

Two weeks later, the estate was quiet once more. The bullet holes in the walls had been patched, the broken windows replaced, and the O’Connor syndicate had dissolved overnight following the federal indictment of Marcus Vance and the surrender of their remaining leadership.

In the master suite, Claire stood by the window watching the afternoon sun wash over the gardens. She was holding a packed leather suitcase.

The door clicked open, and Vincent walked in. He looked different—lighter, his shoulders unburdened, the haunting shadow in his dark eyes finally replaced by a quiet peace.

Claire turned, her heart skipping a beat. "Mr. Romano."

"Claire," he said softly, walking toward her. "What is this?"

She gestured to the suitcase. "The danger has passed. The O’Connors are gone, and Marcus is in federal custody. It’s time... time for Rosie and me to move on. Find a place of our own."

Vincent stopped dead in his tracks. The mere thought of walking through the grand hallways of this estate and finding them empty sent a sharp, agonizing pang through his chest.

"Move on to where?" Vincent asked, his voice tightening. "You have no home, Claire. This is your home."

"Vincent, I can't stay here pretending to be a housekeeper while living in your master suite," she said, tears glistening in her eyes. "People talk. And more importantly... I realized something dangerous over the past few weeks."

Vincent took another step closer, closing the distance between them until he could smell the faint scent of vanilla and rain on her skin. "What did you realize?"

"I realized that I stopped being invisible," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "I realized that I started caring about whether the man who rules Boston eats his dinner, whether his shoulder wound is healing properly, and whether he’ll ever let go of the ghost of the past."

Vincent reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping her cheek. His thumb brushed away a stray tear.

"Madeline was my past, Claire," Vincent said, his voice thick with emotion. "She was a chapter of my life that ended in tragedy. But you... and Rosie... you are the reason I survived."

Claire’s breath hitched. "Vincent..."

"Stay," he pleaded, the formidable crime boss completely stripped away, leaving only a man asking the woman he loved for a chance at life. "Stay with me. Not as staff. Not as guests. Stay as my wife. Let me give you and Rosie a real home."

Before Claire could answer, the door swung open wide.

Rosie stood on the threshold, holding the butterfly hairbrush in one hand and another crayon drawing in the other. She looked up at them with a bright, knowing smile.

"Can we stay, Mommy?" Rosie asked innocently. "Mr. Vincent promised to teach me how to bake cookies."

Claire looked down at her daughter, then up into Vincent’s dark, steady eyes. The walls of her own heart—built out of past failures and protective fears—finally gave way completely.

May you like

She smiled, placing her hand over Vincent’s on her cheek.

"Yes, angel," Claire whispered. "We can stay."
