Chapter 2 - The Paper Fortress

The high-stakes emergency room at UCSF Medical Center was sterile, brightly lit, and devoid of the lies that filled the Vance family estate.
Seven stitches. A minor concussion. A cervical sprain from the impact.
By 4:00 AM, I was sitting in a private recovery room, wearing a fresh cotton gown, an ice pack pressed against the left side of my face. Maya sat in the chair beside my bed, holding a paper cup of black coffee she hadn't touched.
The door opened, and Arthur Pendelton stepped into the room. Arthur was sixty-five, wore a impeccably tailored gray suit despite the hour, and carried a leather briefcase that held thirty years of corporate law experience. He had been my father’s primary trust attorney before my father passed, and he was the only man in San Francisco who feared neither Charles Vance nor his political connections.
"Claire," Arthur said, his eyes darkening as he took in the bandages on my head. "The dispatcher called my office directly per your pre-arranged instructions. Are you alright?"
"I'm alive, Arthur," I said quietly. "Did you secure the files?"
Arthur pulled a laptop from his briefcase and opened it on the rolling tray table beside my bed. "The moment I received your call, my team executed an emergency freeze on all joint financial accounts. The condo title is entirely in your name—purchased three years before you married Adrian with your own inheritance. They couldn't have taken it legally even if you had agreed."
"They weren't planning to take it legally, Arthur," Maya interjected softly. "Charles had a real estate attorney draw up a fraudulent deed transfer. They were going to force Claire to sign it under duress tonight. They knew her father had died six months ago and assumed she was too emotionally fragile to fight back."
Arthur turned to Maya, his eyebrows raised. "And who might you be?"
"This is Maya, my sister-in-law," I said. "She saved my life tonight."
Maya looked down at her hands. "I didn't save you, Claire. I just stopped being a coward. For five years, I watched Charles and Eleanor manipulate David and Adrian. I saw how they treated anyone who entered this family as a resource to be harvested. When David died two years ago..." She paused, her voice choking up. "...they told me his death was an accident. A car crash. But it wasn't."
The room went dead silent.
"What do you mean, Maya?" I asked, setting the ice pack down.
"David was going to the district attorney," Maya whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. "He found out that Vance Development was laundering funds through offshore shell companies in the Caymans. Charles caught him. The night David died, he had a massive argument with Charles in that same dining room. Two hours later, David’s car went off the cliff on Highway 1."
Arthur leaned forward, his legal demeanor instantly transforming into that of a predator sighting prey. "Do you have evidence of this, Mrs. Vance?"
"I have David’s journals," Maya said, looking up with fierce determination. "I hid them in a safety deposit box in San Mateo. I was too afraid to use them. But after what Adrian did to Claire tonight... I realize they won't stop until they destroy both of us."
Arthur looked at me, a sharp, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "Claire, this is no longer a simple domestic violence case or a high-asset divorce. This is an enterprise corruption prosecution."
May you like
"I don't just want a divorce, Arthur," I said, the cold fury inside my chest crystallizing into absolute clarity. "I want them penniless. I want Eleanor begging for rent money. I want Charles in a federal prison. And I want Adrian to spend the rest of his youth behind bars."
Arthur snapped his briefcase shut. "Then let us begin."
