Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Patriarch

By Friday afternoon, the dominoes fell with terrifying speed.

The news of Vance Development’s debt default broke across financial media at 1:00 PM. By 2:00 PM, federal marshals, acting on a tip provided by Arthur Pendelton and backed by David Vance’s journals, executed a search warrant on Charles Vance’s private office in Pacific Heights.

I stood across the street from the villa, wrapped in a long trench coat, watching the scene unfold. Maya stood beside me, holding a cup of hot tea.

Boxes of hard drives, tax records, and private ledgers were carried out down the wide stone steps of the estate.

Eleanor Vance stood on the front porch, screaming at the federal agents, her voice hoarse, her designer clothes looking rumpled and absurd in the gray afternoon light.

"You can't do this!" she shrieked, clutching a fur coat around her shoulders. "Do you know who we are? We built this city! Charles, tell them!"

Charles Vance was led out of the house in handcuffs, flanked by two IRS Criminal Investigation agents. His face was gray, his arrogant posture completely shattered. He looked thirty years older than he had at the dinner table six days ago. He didn't look at Eleanor; he didn't look at the reporters gathering at the gate.

His eyes caught mine across the street.

I didn't smile. I didn't mock him. I simply stood straight, holding my chin high, letting him see the woman he had dismissed as a passive source of revenue.

He looked away, his head bowing as he was forced into the back of an unmarked black SUV.

"It’s over," Maya whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks. "David... it’s finally over."

"Not quite," I said, turning toward my car. "There’s still one more account to settle."
