Chapter 8 - The Rebuilding of San Mateo

By the autumn of the following year, the dust had fully settled over the fallen empire of Vance Development.
Charles Vance had been sentenced to twelve years in a federal correctional facility for fraud and tax evasion. Adrian was serving his three-year sentence at a state facility in Solano, with no possibility of early parole.
Vance Development was gone, its assets absorbed, restructured, and rebranded under Vanguard Financial.
On a bright October morning, I stood on the top floor of a newly constructed three-story building in downtown San Mateo. The space smelled of fresh paint, cedar wood, and hope.
The banner above the glass entrance read: THE DAVID AND CLAIRE VANCE CENTER FOR FAMILY JUSTICE.
The center was a fully funded non-profit facility providing legal defense, emergency housing, and psychological support for women and children escaping domestic abuse and financial coercion.
Maya walked up beside me, carrying a armful of folders. She was wearing a professional charcoal suit, her eyes bright, her posture transformed. She served as the executive director of the center.
"The first ten families move into the transitional housing units upstairs tomorrow," Maya said, her voice filled with a deep, quiet pride. "And the legal clinic has already taken on twenty cases this month."
"How are you feeling, Maya?" I asked, looking at her with genuine affection.
"For the first time in my life, Claire, I wake up in the morning and I'm not afraid," she said softly. "I used to think that being part of a powerful family meant being safe. Now I know that real power is being able to stand on your own two feet and protect people who can't protect themselves."
She looked at me, her eyes softening. "What about you? What’s next for Claire?"

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the skyline of the Bay Area. The city was no longer a place of shadows, threats, and hidden traps. It was my home—built on my own terms, secured by my own strength.
"I'm going home to my condo," I said with a warm smile. "I'm going to redecorate the dining room."
