Chapter 5 - The Web of Deceit

By noon the following day, Gabriel Vance delivered his first major breakthrough. We met in his tinted SUV parked two blocks away from Mendoza Urban Development headquarters.

Vance handed me a tablet displaying intercepted text messages and encrypted email threads. "Your wife isn't as careful as she thinks she is, Mateo. We intercepted her cellular traffic using a local IMSI catcher while she was running errands this morning."

I scrolled through the messages. My eyes halted on a series of exchanges between Karina and a man named Dr. Esteban Ramos—a discredited former cardiologist whose medical license had been quietly revoked five years ago for illegal prescription trafficking.

Karina: The secondary dose needs to be undetectable. Is the current concentration sufficient? Ramos: It mimics systemic heart failure perfectly. Standard toxicology won't flag it unless they specifically test for cardiac glycoside analogs. Do not exceed 2ml per dose. Karina: Understood. Payment has been wired to your Panama account.

"This is it," I whispered, my hand shaking with rage. "This is the smoking gun."

"It gets better," Vance said, tapping the screen to bring up a financial chart. "I ran a deep audit on Mendoza Urban Development. Jorge Mendoza is completely overleveraged. He took out massive loans from international investment consortiums to build a commercial mega-complex in Santa Fe. The project is two years behind schedule and bleeding money. If he doesn't secure major collateral by the end of this quarter, his creditors will foreclose on his entire company."

"Which is why he needs my father's Coyoacán land," I realized, the pieces finally coming together into a crystal-clear picture. "Seventy million pesos is just the land value. But if he uses that prime Coyoacán parcel as leverage for new bank loans, he can bail out his entire empire."

"Exactly," Vance nodded. "He’s drowning. He played a twenty-year long game hoping your mother would eventually sell or die quietly. When she didn't, and when Coyoacán land values skyrocketed, he used his daughter to infiltrate your family."

"They engineered my entire marriage," I said, a bitter laugh escaping my throat. "Three years of my life. Every birthday, every anniversary, every romantic dinner... it was all a corporate acquisition strategy."

"So what's the plan?" Vance asked, looking at me intently. "Detective Fuentes has enough here to arrest Dr. Ramos and bring Karina in for questioning. But Jorge Mendoza has team of high-powered attorneys. If we strike now, Jorge will sever ties with Karina, throw her under the bus as a rogue actor, and use his influence to tie up the land in litigation for the next decade."

"No," I said, my voice dropping into a hard, dangerous tone. "I don't just want Karina arrested. I want Jorge Mendoza ruined. I want him to lose his empire, his freedom, and his pride. I want him to suffer the exact fate he inflicted on my father."

"How do you propose we do that?"

"Tonight, Jorge is coming to my apartment to have me sign the land transfer documents," I explained. "We are going to give him exactly what he wants—or at least, what he thinks he wants."

I spent the next three hours with Detective Fuentes and a team of white-collar crime prosecutors at the district attorney's office. We drafted a meticulous trap. We replaced the original power-of-attorney documents with sophisticated, legally binding counter-agreements embedded with confession clauses and asset-freeze triggers.

Furthermore, Fuentes secured a warrant for wiretapping and covert audio-visual recording inside my apartment.

When I returned home at 6:00 PM, Karina was setting the dining table with fine china and silver. She had put on a black cocktail dress and opened a bottle of vintage Vega Sicilia wine. She was celebrating what she believed was the final execution of her family's master plan.

"You look beautiful, Karina," I said, walking into the dining room.

"Tonight is a new beginning for us, Mateo," she said, coming over to press her lips against mine. Her kiss felt like ice. "Once my father handles the paperwork, we can put all this tragedy behind us. We can take a vacation to Europe. Just the two of us."

"That sounds wonderful," I smiled, looking into the eyes of the woman who had poisoned my mother. "Just the two of us."

At precisely 7:30 PM, the doorbell rang.

Jorge Mendoza had arrived.
