Chapter 8 - Awakening and Reckoning

I ran through the hospital corridors, my heart pounding in my chest. When I pushed open the door to my mother's room, I saw her sitting up in bed, supported by pillows. She looked frail and pale, but her eyes—those sharp, intelligent eyes that had protected me my entire life—were open and focused.

"Mateo," she whispered, her voice weak but clear.

"Mom!" I rushed to her side, falling to my knees beside the bed and burying my face in her blanket, tears finally pouring freely from my eyes. "Mom, you're awake."

Her hand, warm and gentle, rested on my hair. "I heard you, my boy. In my sleep... I heard you calling me."

"It's over, Mom," I sobbed, holding her hand tightly. "I found the box. I opened it with the brass key. I know everything about Dad, about Hector, about Jorge... and about Karina."

My mother squeezed my hand gently, a sad, knowing smile on her lips. "I tried so hard to protect you from that bloodline, Mateo. When you brought Karina home three years ago, my heart sank. I recognized her eyes—she had Hector's cold, calculating eyes. But you were so happy, so in love. I thought... I prayed I was just being a paranoid old woman."

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"Because without proof, you would have thought I was insane," she said softly. "And because I knew what the Mendozas were capable of. When Karina started bringing me those teas, I began to feel sick... I knew what she was doing. But I didn't want to die leaving you defenseless. That's why I hid the key in my clothes before I collapsed."

"You saved us, Mom," I said, kissing her hand. "The police arrested Jorge and Karina tonight. They have everything—the poison, the financial records, the recorded confessions. They are never going to hurt us again."

Tears welling in her eyes, my mother looked up at the ceiling, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Rodrigo... my dear Rodrigo. You can rest now. Your son has saved our family."

Over the next two weeks, the scandal exploded across the nation.

The arrest of billionaire developer Jorge Mendoza and his socialite daughter Karina sent shockwaves through Mexico's political and business elites. Headline news detailed the lurid story of corporate greed, attempted murder by poison, and a decades-long land grab scheme.

With Gabriel Vance's financial audit exposed to the press, Mendoza Urban Development's stock plummeted to zero in forty-eight hours. Creditors panicked, demanding immediate repayment of loans. The bank foreclosed on Jorge's mega-projects, completely dissolving his corporate empire.

From my office at the architecture firm, I watched the news broadcasts showing Jorge and Karina being led into federal court in orange jumpsuits and handcuffs. Their high-priced legal team tried desperately to secure bail, but given the overwhelming wiretap evidence and toxicological proof, the judge ordered both held without bail pending trial.

One afternoon, I received a phone call from Jorge’s chief defense attorney, a sleek, arrogant man named Licenciado Bernardo Treviño.

"Señor Ruiz," Treviño said smoothly over the phone. "I am calling on behalf of my client, Señor Jorge Mendoza. We are prepared to offer you an out-of-court settlement. Señor Mendoza will sign over fifty million pesos in cash and drop all legal claims to any properties in exchange for your testimony being... adjusted regarding the dinner conversation."

I let out a cold, amused chuckle. "Licenciado Treviño, do you know what my father’s land in Coyoacán is worth?"

"Seventy million pesos," Treviño replied.

"No," I corrected him firmly. "It's worth my father's life, my mother's suffering, and three years of my stolen trust. Tell your client that no amount of money in the world can buy my silence. I will sit in that courtroom every single day until he and his daughter are sentenced to life in prison."

I hung up the phone before he could answer.

The time for fear was over. The time for justice had arrived.
