Chapter 7 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Before Jorge or Karina could process my words, the front door of the apartment was shattered open with a deafening crash.
"POLICE! DON'T MOVE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!"
Heavy boots thundered down the hallway as a tactical team armed with submachine guns poured into the dining room. Flashlights blinded Jorge and Karina as officers flooded the space, taking tactical positions.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Jorge bellowed, standing up furiously. "Do you know who I am?! I am Jorge Mendoza! Call Chief Of—"
Detective Marisol Fuentes stepped through the doorway, holding a federal arrest warrant high in her hand.
"Jorge Mendoza," Fuentes announced clearly, her voice echoing in the apartment. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, extortion, and corporate fraud. Hands behind your back. Now!"
Two officers grabbed Jorge’s arms, forcing him down onto the table. The billionaire developer, who had spent his life stepping on others, was pinned against his own expensive dining settings, his face pressed into a plate of steak.
"Karina Mendoza," Fuentes continued, turning to my wife. "You are under arrest for the attempted murder of Elena Ruiz through illegal chemical administration, conspiracy, and fraud."
Karina panicked. She shrieked, kicking and flailing as an officer pulled her arms behind her back, snapping steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
"Mateo! Mateo, tell them!" she screamed, tears running down her face, her composure completely shattered. "Tell them it's a mistake! I love you! I was forced into this by my father! Mateo, please!"
I stood up slowly and walked over to her. I looked down into her tear-streaked face—the face I had kissed every morning, the face I had trusted with my life.
"You said it yourself, Karina," I whispered coldly. "Did I really think someone like you could love someone like me? The difference is, I know what real love is. And it isn't built on poison."
"You bastard!" Jorge roared from the table, his face red with fury as officers pulled him to his feet. "You think this is over?! My lawyers will have me out on bail before sunrise! I will crush you, Ruiz! I will erase you and your pathetic mother from existence!"
"I don't think so, Jorge," Detective Fuentes said, pulling out a tablet. "While we were recording your charming dinner conversation, federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants on your private residence in Pedregal, your corporate headquarters, and Dr. Esteban Ramos's illegal clinic."
Jorge’s eyes widened in genuine horror.
"We seized Dr. Ramos's ledgers," Fuentes added with a sharp smile. "He kept meticulous records of every payment your daughter made for the glycoside toxin. And we seized your offshore transaction logs. The Attorney General has already frozen all Mendoza Urban Development accounts under federal racketeering laws. You aren't getting bail, Señor Mendoza. You're going to a maximum-security federal facility."
The blood completely drained from Jorge’s face. The invulnerable titan of Mexico City real estate collapsed into himself, looking suddenly like a broken, pathetic old man.
The police dragged Jorge and Karina out of the apartment. As Karina was pushed through the doorway, she looked back at me one last time, her eyes filled with desperate, weeping terror. I didn't feel joy or triumph; I just felt a deep, cleansing silence settle over the room.
Detective Fuentes walked over to me, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder. "It's done, Mateo. We got them."

"How is my mother?" I asked, my voice trembling.
Fuentes smiled warmly. "I just got a call from the hospital two minutes ago. Doña Elena has regained consciousness. She's asking for her son."
