Chapter 1 - The Promise Kept

The sound of Emma’s timid voice echoed down the darkened hallway, striking Matteo’s heart like a bolt of lightning.

"Matt? Is that you?"

Below Matteo’s leather boot, Derek Walsh gasped for air, his hands clawing uselessly at the cold floorboards. The drunk brute’s eyes bulged with terror as he realized the man standing over him was not a concerned neighbor or a timid relative—he was a predator far higher on the food chain.

Matteo didn't take his eyes off the stairs. His grip on Derek’s throat remained ironclad, but his voice, when he spoke upward toward the shadows, transformed entirely. The harshness vanished, replaced by a gentle, steady calm he hadn't used in sixteen years.

"Yes, Emma. It's Matt," he said softly, keeping his tone measured and warm. "I need you to do something for me, sweetheart. Stay right where you are for just ten seconds. Close your eyes and cover your ears. Can you do that for me?"

"Okay..." came the small, trembling reply from the top of the landing.

Matteo looked down at Derek. The coldness returned to his eyes, absolute and devoid of mercy.

"You have two choices," Matteo whispered, leaning down so only the trembling man could hear. "You can make a sound, and I will ensure you never speak again. Or you can crawl into that closet, lock yourself inside, and wait for the police. If you ever come within a mile of Sarah or Emma again, I won't send you to jail. I'll make you disappear. Do you understand me?"

Derek nodded frantically, tears of pain mixing with the sweat on his face. The moment Matteo lifted his foot, Derek scrambled like a frightened rat into the hall closet, pulling the door shut and weeping in the dark.

Matteo didn't waste another second on him. He hurried over to Sarah, who lay unconscious in the ruined living room. Kneeling beside her, he gently checked her airway and smoothed the blood-matted hair away from her pale forehead. Her pulse was thin but stable. She had a severe concussion and broken ribs, but she was alive.

He pulled his phone from his coat pocket and dialed his private physician, Dr. Aris Thorne—a trusted surgeon who handled discreet, high-priority emergencies for the Reichi family.

"Aris," Matteo said, his voice crisp. "I have a trauma victim at 412 Elm Street. Traumatic head injury, possible internal bleeding. Bring a mobile trauma unit and two private nurses. No media, no public logs. Now."

"On my way, Matteo," the doctor replied instantly.

Matteo hung up and turned toward the stairs.

A small figure stepped slowly out of the shadows at the top of the landing. Emma was tiny for an eight-year-old, her pale blue pajamas smudged with dust and torn at the knee. She was holding a cracked smartphone with both hands, clutching it against her chest like a shield. Her dark curls hung in messy rings around her small, tear-streaked face.

She looked down at Matteo—this tall, imposing man in a pristine black coat with dark, piercing eyes and broad shoulders. To anyone else, he looked like the undisputed king of Boston’s underworld. But to Emma, he was the voice that had kept her from slipping into the dark.

"Matt?" she whispered, her lower lip trembling.

Matteo slowly walked up the stairs, stopping two steps below her so he wouldn't tower over her small frame. He slowly sank onto his knees, bringing himself eye-to-eye with her.

"Hey, Emma," he said softly, offering her a faint, genuine smile. "I told you I was coming."

Emma looked at him for a long, silent second. Then, dropping her cracked phone onto the rug, she threw her tiny arms around his neck, burying her face into the collar of his coat, sobbing hysterically.

Matteo froze. For years, no one had touched him without fear, submission, or deadly intent. The sudden weight of a child trusting him so completely felt like a phantom hand tearing open the sealed vault of his heart.

Slowly, carefully, as if she were made of fragile spun glass, Matteo wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close against his chest. He rested his chin on her curly hair, stroking her back in rhythmic, calming motions.

"Shh... I've got you," Matteo murmured, his eyes stinging with unbidden tears. "I've got you, Emma. It's over. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or your mama again. I promise."

"Is Mama dead?" Emma sobbed, her little chest heaving. "There was so much blood..."

"She's breathing, sweetheart. She's resting," Matteo assured her gently, lifting her into his arms as he stood up. "I brought a special doctor to help her. She's going to be okay."

As Matteo carried Emma down the stairs, he looked at her little face. In the dim light of the hallway, he saw the same innocent, terrified eyes that had looked up at him sixteen years ago in a cold hospital room.

Isabella.

The memory of his lost sister didn't crush him this time. Instead, it burned through his chest like white-hot iron, forging an unbreakable vow. Sixteen years ago, Michael Rodriguez had been too weak to save his sister. But tonight, Matteo Reichi had the power, the wealth, and the ruthlessness to protect this little girl and her mother from anything in the world.

Sirens didn't blare in the driveway—Dr. Thorne arrived in an unmarked black ambulance within seven minutes. Two skilled medics rushed into the house with a stretcher, quickly stabilizing Sarah and lifting her onto the gurney.

Emma clung tightly to Matteo's neck, refusing to let go. When the medics wheeled Sarah toward the ambulance, Emma gasped, "Mama!"

"It's okay, Emma," Matteo said softly, shifting her securely on his hip. "We're going with her."

Dr. Thorne walked up to Matteo, eyeing the scene with professional calm. "She needs immediate surgery to relieve intracranial pressure, Matteo. St. Elizabeth’s Private Wing is ready. Who is the man in the closet?"

Matteo looked toward the closet door, his eyes turning to black ice.

"Vincent is outside," Matteo said coldly. "Tell him to clean up the house. As for Derek Walsh... tell Vincent to hold him in the dockyard warehouse until I come for him."

Dr. Thorne nodded grimly. "Understood."

Matteo carried Emma out into the cool night air and placed her gently into the leather back seat of his armored sedan. He climbed in beside her, pulling a soft wool blanket from the trunk and wrapping it around her small shoulders.

Emma snuggled close to his side, her tiny hand clutching the sleeve of his expensive coat. She looked up at him, her dark eyes shiny with trust.

"Matt?" she asked quietly as the car purred to life.

"Yeah, Emma?"

"How did you get my text?"

May you like

Matteo looked down at his phone resting on the console—the phone that only brought blood and business, until a little girl’s desperate fingers had dialed a wrong digit in the dark.

"I think," Matteo said softly, wrapping his arm around her, "it was the only right number in the world."
