Chapter 5 - The Fragile Blossom

When Matteo stepped into the penthouse, the scent of fresh chocolate chip cookies was still warm in the air.
Sarah was sitting on the sofa in the living room, a soft throw blanket draped over her knees. She was reading a book, but the moment the front door clicked open, she set the book aside and stood up.
She looked at Matteo, scanning his face, his coat, his hands. When she saw no blood, no injury, a soft sigh of relief escaped her lips.
"You came back," Sarah said quietly.
"I promised," Matteo replied, removing his coat and hanging it in the closet. "Where’s Emma?"
"She tried to stay awake for you," Sarah smiled gently, stepping toward him. "But she passed out twenty minutes ago. I put her to bed in the guest room."
Matteo walked into the kitchen, where a plate of three warm chocolate chip cookies sat covered by a paper towel, along with a note written in childish crayon: For Matt.
A genuine, soft smile broke across Matteo’s face. He picked up one of the cookies and took a bite.
"How is it?" Sarah asked, leaning against the kitchen island, watching him with warm hazel eyes.
"It's incredible," Matteo admitted honestly. "Best cookie I've ever had."
"Emma helped with the chocolate chips," Sarah said softly. She paused, her expression turning earnest and quiet. "Matteo... Vincent told me you went to a meeting tonight. Is everything okay? Are we causing you trouble with your... business?"
Matteo walked over to the kitchen island, placing his hands on the marble counter, looking across at her.
"Derek Walsh will never bother you again, Sarah," Matteo said, his voice deep and steady. "He is gone. Far away from this city. You and Emma are completely safe."
Sarah looked at him, her chest rising and falling as tears welled in her eyes. The crushing weight of fear that she had carried for years suddenly lifted, leaving her light, breathless, and overwhelmed with emotion.
"I don't know how to exist without being afraid," Sarah admitted, her voice shaking as a tear slipped down her cheek. "For four years... ever since my husband died... every knock on the door, every strange shadow in the alley felt like a threat. And then Derek..."
She wiped her tear quickly, looking down at her hands. "I felt so helpless, Matteo. I felt like I was failing my daughter."
Matteo moved around the counter. He didn't hesitate. He reached out and gently placed his large, warm hands on her shoulders.
Sarah looked up, meeting his fierce, dark gaze.
"You didn't fail her, Sarah," Matteo said with quiet intensity. "You raised an amazingly brave, smart little girl who fought for you when you couldn't fight for yourself. You survived. That isn't failure. That is strength."
Sarah looked into his eyes, feeling the absolute sincerity behind his words. Instinctively, she leaned into his touch, resting her forehead gently against his broad chest.
Matteo went still for a second, then slowly wrapped his long arms around her, holding her securely against him. He felt her sigh against his ribs, her body relaxing into his strength.
For a long, quiet moment, they stood together in the warm kitchen. No words were needed. Two broken people, both scarred by the cruelties of the world, finding peace in each other’s arms.
The next morning, Matteo made a decision that surprised even Vincent.
He called an emergency meeting at Reichi Holdings—his legitimate corporate front that managed real estate, shipping logistics, and legal investments across New England.
Sitting at the head of the boardroom table, Matteo looked at his senior lawyers and financial managers.
"I want a revocable trust established today," Matteo commanded smoothly. "Ten million dollars, managed under the name of Sarah and Emma Peterson. Full coverage for Emma’s private school education, university, housing, and medical care for life."
The head lawyer blinked in surprise. "Ten million, Mr. Reichi? Are they relatives?"
"They are my priority," Matteo corrected coldly. "Ensure the paperwork is finalized by 3:00 p.m."
After the meeting, Matteo drove to a high-end residential neighborhood near Jamaica Plain. He pulled up in front of a beautiful, three-story Victorian house surrounded by a lush green lawn, white picket fences, and ancient oak trees.
He had purchased the property six months ago as an investment, but as he looked at the quiet street, the nearby elementary school, and the safe, friendly neighborhood, he knew it was meant for someone else.
At 4:00 p.m., Matteo took Sarah and Emma for a drive.
Emma sat in the back seat, pressing her nose against the window, watching the trees pass by. "Where are we going, Matt? Are we getting ice cream?"
"Maybe after," Matteo smiled, glancing at her in the rearview mirror.
When the sedan pulled up to the curb of the Victorian house, Sarah looked out the window in awe. "It’s beautiful... who lives here?"
"Nobody yet," Matteo said, turning off the engine. "Let's take a look inside."
He guided Sarah and Emma up the wooden porch steps, pulling a brass key from his pocket and opening the front door.
Inside, the house was bright, spacious, and filled with warm sunlight streaming through large bay windows. Hardwood floors, a brick fireplace, a grand modern kitchen, and four large bedrooms upstairs.
Emma ran through the spacious living room, gasping in delight. "Look, Mama! It has a huge yard! There’s a tire swing on the tree outside!"
Sarah walked slowly through the living room, touching the smooth wooden trim, completely mesmerized. "Matteo... why are we here?"
Matteo walked up beside her, placing the brass key gently into her hand.
"This is your home, Sarah," Matteo said softly. "The deed is in your name. The neighborhood is safe, the local school is three blocks away, and you never have to work two jobs or worry about rent ever again."
Sarah stared down at the shiny brass key in her palm. Her heart pounded, and her eyes went wide with shock.
"No..." Sarah breathed, shaking her head. "No, Matteo, I can't accept this! This is too much! Millions of dollars... a house... we can't accept this from you!"
"You can, and you will," Matteo insisted gently, wrapping his fingers around hers, closing her hand over the key. "Sarah, listen to me. Sixteen years ago, I lost my little sister, Isabella. She died because I couldn't protect her. For sixteen years, I lived in darkness, believing I was incapable of saving anyone."
His voice softened, filled with profound emotion.
"Emma’s text brought me to your door. Protecting you and Emma... it brought me back to life. This house isn't charity. It’s my promise to keep you safe."
Sarah looked at him, tears pouring down her cheeks. She saw the raw vulnerability in this powerful man's eyes—the deep pain he had carried for so long, and the incredible love he was offering to her and her child.
She didn't argue anymore. Instead, she stepped forward, threw her arms around his waist, and buried her face in his neck, weeping tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude.

"Thank you, Matteo," she sobbed softly. "Thank you for saving us."
Matteo held her tight, resting his hand on her hair, looking out the bay window at Emma playing happily on the lawn. For the first time in sixteen years, Matteo Reichi felt complete.
