Chapter 7 - The Burden of Love

The safehouse in the white mountains of New Hampshire was a massive, isolated timber lodge surrounded by dense pine forests and high stone walls.
For three days, Sarah and Emma stayed inside the warm, luxurious lodge. Ten armed guards patrolled the grounds, providing absolute security.
But Matteo wasn't there.
He had stayed in Boston to conduct a ruthless, relentless purge of every remaining threat to his family. Marco Carmine and his associates were permanently eliminated, their networks dismantled, and the Boston crime families officially disbanded under a historic, peaceful transition that saw Matteo hand all shipping and real estate assets over to legitimate, legal corporations.
The mafia boss had torn down his own empire.
Yet, sitting in his quiet penthouse in the North End, Matteo felt completely hollow.
He sat at his desk, staring at a framed photograph Emma had drawn for him—a crayon picture of Matteo, Sarah, and Emma standing in front of the Victorian house, with a bright yellow sun and the words: My Hero Matt.
The door to his study opened softly. Vincent walked in, placing a folder on the desk.
"It's done, boss," Vincent said quietly. "The Carmine network is entirely gone. The city is clean. You're legally cleared, the business transition is complete, and there are no threats left."
Matteo didn't look up from the drawing. "Good. Ensure the security detail remains at the lodge until Sarah decides where she wants to live."
Vincent sighed, stepping closer to the desk. "Matteo... why aren't you in New Hampshire?"
"You know why, Vincent," Matteo said softly, his dark eyes filled with unbearable pain. "My world brings death. Look at what happened at the house. If I stay near them, someone else will eventually come for me, and next time... Emma or Sarah might get hurt."
"They're not afraid of your world, Matteo," Vincent said firmly. "They're afraid of losing you. Sarah has called me ten times today asking when you're coming home."
Matteo closed his eyes, his jaw clenching. "I am protecting them."
"No," Vincent corrected gently. "You're punishing yourself for what happened to Isabella sixteen years ago. You think you don't deserve a real family because you couldn't save your sister. But Sarah and Emma don't see a mob boss, Matteo. They see the man who saved their lives."
Vincent turned and walked toward the door, pausing at the entrance.
"If you let them go now," Vincent added quietly, "you're not protecting them. You're breaking their hearts."
Up in New Hampshire, Sarah stood on the balcony of the timber lodge, watching the sun set behind the mountains.
She wore a warm wool sweater, clutching a mug of tea, her heart heavy with a profound, aching sadness.
She knew why Matteo hadn't come. She knew he was blaming himself for the attack at the house. She knew he was pulling away to shield them from his dangerous past.
"Mama?" Emma walked out onto the balcony, holding her favorite teddy bear. "Is Matt ever coming back?"
Sarah knelt down, wrapping her arm around Emma’s small shoulders. "He thinks he’s keeping us safe by staying away, baby."
"But I don't feel safe without him," Emma wept softly, looking up at her mother with tearful eyes. "I don't care about the scary men, Mama. Matt protected us. He promised he wouldn't leave us."
Sarah looked into her daughter’s eyes, feeling a wave of fierce determination rise within her.
Matteo Reichi had spent his entire life fighting for others—fighting for his family, fighting for his territory, fighting for survival. But no one had ever fought for him. No one had ever shown him that he was worthy of love, peace, and a happy home.
"Get your coat, Emma," Sarah said, her voice filled with quiet strength.

Emma blinked. "Where are we going?"
"We're going back to Boston," Sarah declared, holding Emma’s hand tightly. "We're going to bring our hero home."
