Chapter 3 - THE SNAKE IN THE PANTRY

By 7:00 AM, the sun had risen over the estate, casting warm gold light across the polished marble floors.

Jacob and Jonah woke up around eight. For the first time in months, according to their previous medical logs, they didn't wake up screaming from night terrors. Their eyes were still heavy and their movements sluggish, but when I walked into the room carrying a tray of light toast, warm milk, and fresh berries, Jonah gave me a timid, fragile smile.

"Good morning, sleepyheads," I said cheerfully, setting the tray on the bedside table. "I’m Emily."

Jacob, the slightly older twin by four minutes, sat up slowly, eyeing me with the cautious wariness typical of children who had known too many doctors and needle pricks. "Are you a nurse?"

"Nope. I’m your new nanny," I said, sitting on the edge of the bed. "And my primary rule is that breakfast must be eaten in bed on rainy days."

"It's not raining," Jonah pointed out, looking toward the bright window.

"It's raining somewhere in the world," I replied with a wink. "So the rule applies."

A small chuckle escaped Jonah’s lips—a sound so precious it made my heart soar.

While the boys nibbled on their toast, Mrs. Bennett stepped into the room holding a silver tray with two small glass cups filled with a dark purple liquid. She wore her usual immaculate uniform, her hair pinned back in a tight, flawless bun.

"Good morning, boys," Mrs. Bennett said, her voice smooth and maternal. "It's time for your herbal supplement blend. Dr. Reeves insists you take it every morning before breakfast."

My internal alarm bells chimed instantly.

"Mrs. Bennett," I said smoothly, stepping between her and the bed. "I’ve taken over the boys' morning routine per Mr. Coleman's instructions. What is in those cups?"

Mrs. Bennett stopped, her expression hardening subtly before returning to a polite smile. "It's a specialized vitamin concentrate prepared by Dr. Reeves to help with their appetite. I’ve administered it personally for six months, Miss Dawson."

"I see," I said, reaching out to take the tray from her hands. "I'll make sure they take it after I review the dosage log with Mr. Coleman."

Mrs. Bennett’s grip on the silver handles tightened slightly. "Dr. Reeves was very specific. It must be taken on an empty stomach."

"And Mr. Coleman was very specific that I manage all health interventions starting today," I replied, keeping my tone polite but unyielding. "Thank you, Mrs. Bennett. You may go."

Her gray eyes locked onto mine with a cold, piercing intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. She knew. She realized that the dynamic in the house had shifted, and that her authority was being challenged.

"Very well," she murmured, releasing the tray into my hands. "Don't say I didn't warn you if their weakness returns."

She turned and walked out, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.

The moment she was gone, I set the silver tray on the desk, extracted a clean sample vial from my nursing kit, and transferred five milliliters of the purple liquid into it.

"Emily?" Jacob asked, watching me closely. "Are we sick because of the juice?"

I walked back to the bed, stroking his forehead gently. "You're going to get better now, Jacob. I promise you both. No more dark juice, no more bad air."

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text message from Nathan:

‘Reeves is secured. We found six million dollars in offshore transfers from Moretti’s shell company to his account. Coming home now. How are the boys?’

I typed back immediately:

May you like

‘The boys are eating. Mrs. Bennett just tried to administer an unlabelled purple supplement. I confiscated a sample. Do not let her leave the grounds.’

Five minutes later, the roar of multiple high-powered engines echoed through the driveway. The final reckoning inside the mansion had begun.
