Chapter 4 - UNMASKING THE HOUSE MANAGER

The grand foyer felt like a battlefield. Nathan walked in, flanked by Frank and three imposing men in dark suits. His coat was damp from the morning mist, his expression dark and thunderous.

Mrs. Bennett was standing near the grand staircase, holding a leather travel bag, clearly preparing to leave through the rear staff entrance.

"Going somewhere, Evelyn?" Nathan’s voice boomed through the high-ceilinged room, stopping her in her tracks.

Mrs. Bennett turned slowly. The composure she had maintained for two decades began to crack, revealing a bitter, desperate woman underneath. "Nathan... I was just running an errand to the organic market in town."

"With a packed suitcase?" Frank remarked, stepping behind her to cut off her escape route.

Nathan walked up to her, his posture imposing. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a printout of financial records that Frank’s team had intercepted during the night.

"Twenty years," Nathan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, emotional whisper. "My father hired you. You raised me after my mother died. You were here when Rebecca came into my life. You held my sons when they were born!"

"You ruined this family, Nathan!" Mrs. Bennett suddenly spat, her voice trembling with decades of accumulated venom. "Your father built a respectable empire! But you... you brought violence, you brought rivalries, you brought war into this house! Rebecca died because of your lifestyle!"

"Rebecca died in a car accident!" Nathan roared.

"Because Moretti sabotaged her brakes!" Mrs. Bennett yelled back, tears of bitter rage spilling down her wrinkled cheeks. "And you did nothing! You let Moretti live because of some pathetic mob truce! I made a deal with Moretti because he promised to wipe you out and let me take the boys away to raise them safely!"

I stood at the top of the stairs, listening in utter horror.

Mrs. Bennett wasn't just a paid informant; in her twisted, warped mind, she believed that slowly poisoning the boys to ruin Nathan financially and mentally was an act of salvation. She was willing to destroy the children's bodies to 'save' them from their father's lifestyle.

"By poisoning them?" I called out, stepping down the stairs holding the vial of purple liquid. "You were feeding them organophosphate concentrates in their juice, Evelyn! You were destroying their nervous systems!"

Mrs. Bennett glared at me with pure hatred. "They wouldn't have died! Dr. Reeves had the antidote! Once Nathan was bankrupt and stripped of his power by the syndicate board, Moretti was going to fund their treatment in Switzerland under my guardianship!"

Nathan closed his eyes, taking a deep, agonizing breath. The sheer betrayal of a woman he had trusted as a surrogate mother was a deeper wound than any bullet could ever inflict.

"Take her down to the holding facility," Nathan commanded Frank softly, turning his back on her. "Hand her and Reeves over to the federal prosecutors along with the lab reports. Let the law destroy them. If I kill them, I pollute my sons' home further."

Frank nodded grimly. "Understood, boss."

As Mrs. Bennett was escorted out, weeping and cursing, Nathan stood alone in the center of the vast, marble foyer, looking utterly exhausted. The terrifying mafia boss looked, in that moment, like a broken man standing in the ruins of his personal world.

I walked down the remaining stairs, stopping a few feet away from him.

"You saved them, Nathan," I said softly. "You listened when everyone else dismissed a nanny's intuition."

Nathan looked up at me, his eyes filled with a complex mixture of pain, gratitude, and a growing, deep affection. "No, Emily. You saved us. All three of us."
