Chapter 5 - THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

Three weeks passed.

The estate underwent a massive transformation. Nathan hired an elite environmental remediation firm that stripped the entire east wing ductwork, replaced the HVAC systems with medical-grade HEPA filters, and certified every square inch of the mansion clean.

More importantly, the boys were thriving.

Without the toxic air and the poisoned supplements, Jacob and Jonah’s bodies began to heal at a remarkable pace. The dark circles under their eyes faded, replaced by healthy, rosy cheeks. Under my guidance, they began a physical therapy regimen to rebuild their weakened leg muscles.

"Look, Emily! Look!" Jonah shouted one sunny Tuesday afternoon on the wide back lawn.

He kicked a small red soccer ball toward his brother. Jacob ran after it—not with full strength yet, but with a joyful, energetic sprint that would have been impossible a month ago.

Sitting on a teak garden bench, Nathan watched them with a smile that reached his eyes for the first time since I had met him. He had stripped off his usual dark suit jacket, wearing a rolled-up white dress shirt, looking younger, relaxed, and remarkably handsome.

"Six months ago, I was preparing to buy two small burial plots," Nathan said softly, taking a sip of lemonade I had brought out. "Now they won't stop running."

"Children are incredibly resilient when you remove the toxins from their environment," I said, sitting beside him on the bench. "Physical and emotional."

Nathan turned to look at me. "And what about your environment, Emily? Are you happy here?"

I blushed slightly, adjusting my sweater. "I love Jacob and Jonah, Nathan. Working here... it’s been the most fulfilling month of my life."

"Just the boys?" he asked, his voice low and intimate, stepping closer to the unspoken boundary that had been growing between us.

Before I could answer, Frank walked out onto the patio, holding a secure satellite phone with a grim expression.

"Boss. We have a situation," Frank reported. "Moretti knows Bennett and Reeves were handed over to the Feds. His lawyers are trying to suppress their testimony, but he’s desperate. Our intelligence indicates he’s hired outside contractors from Boston. They're moving against our supply routes in Bridgeport."

Nathan’s relaxed posture vanished, replaced instantly by the calculating strategist. "Gather the captains. We meet at the downtown office in an hour."

"Nathan..." I said, worry creeping into my tone. "Be careful."

Nathan looked down at me, placing a hand gently over mine. His touch was warm, sending a flutter through my chest. "This is the final cleanup, Emily. Once Moretti’s syndicate is dismantled, this family will finally be free."
