Chapter 7 - THE TIDE TURNS

The failed assault on the Coleman estate was Dominick Moretti’s final, fatal blunder.
Within forty-eight hours, federal SWAT teams, armed with video footage from the mansion’s security system and sworn affidavits from Mrs. Bennett, Dr. Reeves, and captured gunmen, raided Moretti’s Greenwich estate and his downtown headquarters. Moretti was arrested without bail on charges of attempted kidnapping, attempted murder, racketeering, and corporate terrorism.
The New England underworld collapsed into silence. Nathan used his immense influence to broker a permanent peace among the remaining legitimate business leaders, stepping away from illegal operations entirely and transitioning the Coleman empire into a fully legitimate international logistics and maritime conglomerate.
A month after the attack, the mansion was peaceful once again.
I was sitting in the renovated glass sunroom, organizing the boys' homeschool curriculum. Jacob and Jonah were outside, playing fetch with a golden retriever puppy Nathan had bought them for their seventh birthday.
Nathan walked into the sunroom, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and slacks, looking completely transformed. The line of tension that had permanently etched his brow was gone.
"The federal prosecutor called this morning," Nathan said, sitting across from me and offering a cup of tea. "Moretti took a plea deal. Thirty years in federal prison without parole. Reeves and Bennett got twenty each."
"It’s finally over," I said, feeling a profound sense of relief.
"Yes," Nathan said softly, reaching across the table to take my hand. "The past is officially dead, Emily. Which means I can finally look toward the future."
I looked into his dark eyes, feeling a warm surge of affection. "And what does the future look like, Mr. Coleman?"
"It looks like a life where I don't have to be a monster to protect the people I love," Nathan said, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles. "And it looks like a life where I ask my boys' incredible nanny if she would consider staying here... not as an employee, but as my partner."
I smiled, my heart swelling with emotion. "Is that an official offer?"
"It’s a plea from a man who fell in love with a woman the moment she stood up to a crooked doctor in his own office," Nathan said sincerely.
Before I could answer, Jacob and Jonah ran into the sunroom, the puppy bouncing at their heels.
"Emily! Daddy!" Jonah yelled excitedly. "Buster caught the ball!"
Nathan lifted Jonah onto his lap, while Jacob leaned against my side. We looked like a real family—a family that had crawled through darkness, toxicity, and violence to find light on the other side.

"So, Miss Dawson?" Nathan asked, his eyes dancing with love and hope. "What's your answer?"
"I think," I said, putting my arm around Jacob and kissing Nathan gently on the lips, "that I'm right where I belong."
