Chapter 10 - The Garden of Peace

Six months later.

The southern sun shone brightly over the rolling hills of my farm just outside Savannah. The air was cool, sweet, and filled with the scent of blooming jasmine and fresh pine.

The legal nightmare was finally over.

Arthur Montgomery was convicted on all counts, including capital murder, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Vanessa Vance-Sterling received twenty-five years for her direct role in the conspiracy and financial fraud. The medical examiner and the corrupt doctor, Dr. Harrison, were both stripped of their licenses and sentenced to federal prison.

The court officially awarded full legal adoption and sole guardianship of Lucy, Rachel, and April to me. Furthermore, the courts restored the full forty-million-dollar estate and Montgomery Shipping Holdings into an irrevocable trust, managed by Julian Vance and held exclusively for the girls until they reached adulthood.

On this quiet Sunday afternoon, we stood together in a small, private garden behind my home.

In the center of the garden sat a beautiful marble bench surrounded by white lilies—Rose’s favorite flower. A bronze plaque mounted on the bench read:

Rose Miller

A mother’s love is stronger than death, brighter than truth, and eternal as the stars.

April, now seven, ran happily through the grass, chasing a yellow butterfly, her joyful laughter echoing across the open pasture. Rachel sat on the wooden porch, painting a watercolor landscape of the sunset, her small hands no longer shaking.

Lucy walked over to the marble bench and sat beside me. She rested her head gently against my shoulder.

"Do you think Mom can see us, Grandpa?" she asked softly, watching the golden light fade across the horizon.

I put my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of her heartbeat.

"I don't just think so, Lucy," I whispered, smiling as I looked at the three healthy, safe, and happy girls blooming in the light of a new day. "I know she can. We built the sanctuary she fought so hard for. And nobody is ever going to take it away from you again."

Lucy smiled, closing her eyes as a gentle, warm breeze swept through the garden, carrying with it the faint, sweet scent of lavender—a gentle reminder that love had won, truth had prevailed, and we were finally home.
