Chapter 3 - Echoes from the Grave

We sat around the heavy oak dining table downstairs. April had finally fallen asleep on the living room sofa, wrapped in her mother's favorite fleece blanket. Rachel sat beside Lucy, her small hands resting nervously on her knees.

I reached for the micro-cassette recorder first. It was an older model, the kind Rose used when she used to work as a freelance investigative journalist before her marriage. I pressed Play.

Hissing static filled the quiet room, followed by the soft, recognizable sound of Rose breathing.

"May 14th," Rose’s recorded voice echoed, frail but intensely clear. "If anyone is listening to this... it means I lost my battle. Not just against my body, but against Arthur. He thinks I don't know about the shell accounts in the Cayman Islands. He thinks I don't know why my health deteriorated so rapidly after I asked for an audit of our joint holdings..."

I froze. "What did she say?"

Lucy opened the leather notebook to a bookmarked page filled with neat handwriting and pasted financial receipts. "Read this part, Grandpa. From three months ago."

I pulled the book closer and read aloud:

June 2nd: The doctor Arthur brought to the house—Dr. Harrison—insists my liver enzymes are spiking due to an unknown genetic condition. But I stopped taking the daily supplements Arthur has been handing me every morning with my tea. Within four days, the tremors stopped. The brain fog cleared. I sent a sample of the white powder from the capsules to a private lab in Atlanta under a fake name. The results arrived today.

My heart plummeted into a dark abyss. "God in heaven... Rose..."

The powder wasn't a vitamin. It was a synthetic immunosuppressant combined with heavy micro-doses of arsenic. He wasn't trying to heal me. He was slowly, methodically shutting down my organs so it would look like a natural, lingering illness. He needs me dead before his 38th birthday because of the irrevocable trust my grandfather built for me. If I die before 38, the entire forty-million-dollar estate reverts to my spouse unless I prove foul play.

Tears scorched my eyes, but I forced myself to keep reading. The detailed pages contained lab reports, secret banking routing numbers, photographs of Arthur meeting with a disgraced physician in private alleyways, and time-stamped text messages between Arthur and Vanessa plotting the takeover of Rose's family estate.

"Why didn't she go to the police?" I screamed, slamming my hand onto the table, unable to contain the agony in my chest. "Why didn't she come to me?!"

"Because he threatened us, Grandpa," Lucy said, her voice finally breaking as tears spilled down her cheeks. "He told her that if she ever called the cops or tried to leave him, he would make sure Rachel, April, and I suffered an 'accident' on the way to school. He showed her photos of our school bus. He had people watching us."

Rose had stayed in that house, silently enduring the slow poison, absorbing the psychological torture, all to buy enough time to assemble an airtight, undeniable mountain of evidence to protect her daughters after she was gone.

"And what about this?" I asked, pointing to the wax-sealed Manila envelope that sat untouched in the center of the table.

"Mom said that envelope is for the day Arthur tries to claim his inheritance," Lucy whispered. "She said it contains the one thing he thinks he destroyed five years ago."
