Chapter 5 - The Legal Counter-Offensive

Arthur’s attorney immediately tried to intervene. "Your Honor! That clip is taken out of context—"

"Silence, counsel," Judge Sterling snapped, her voice cutting like a whip. She leaned forward, staring directly at Arthur, who had turned noticeably pale. "Mr. Montgomery, did those words come out of your mouth at your wife's burial?"

Arthur cleared his throat, adjusting his silk tie. "Your Honor... I was distraught. The pressure of the day—"

"You publicly abandoned your three minor daughters beside their mother's grave," Judge Sterling interrupted coldly. "You stated on record, before hundreds of witnesses, that you had no intention of raising them."

Julian Vance stepped forward, laying a thick dossier on the bench. "Your Honor, we are filing an emergency petition for temporary emergency guardianship based on parental abandonment, emotional cruelty, and severe psychological distress. Furthermore, we request an immediate restraining order preventing Mr. Montgomery or any of his associates from coming within 1,500 feet of the children or Mr. Miller's residence."

Arthur slammed his hand on the defense table. "This is absurd! I am their father! I own the estate they live in!"

"You own nothing until probate is settled, Mr. Montgomery," Judge Sterling boomed, slamming her gavel down with a crack that echoed like a gunshot. "Emergency temporary guardianship of Lucy, Rachel, and April Montgomery is hereby granted to Charles Miller. A protective order is issued immediately. If you so much as drive down Mr. Miller’s street, sir, you will spend the night in Chatham County Jail."

Arthur whirled around to glare at me, his eyes burning with pure venom. "You think you've won, old man?" he sneered in a hushed tone as the judge stepped down. "You can keep the kids. Keep the expense of raising three broken girls. But the forty million dollars? The real estate portfolio? The shipping logistics contracts? They belong to me. The probate hearing is in six days. You don't have the money to fight my legal team."

I looked Arthur dead in the eye, feeling no fear, only a deep, abiding resolve. "You keep telling yourself that, Arthur. But you forgot one thing."

"Oh yeah? What's that?"

"Rose was my daughter. And she never gave up without a fight."

As Arthur swept out of the courtroom, Vanessa glaring at us over her shoulder, Julian turned to me. "Phase one complete. He believes this is just a battle over custody and money. He has no idea the state police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are currently analyzing the toxicological records and the contents of that leather journal."

"What about the Manila envelope, Julian?" I asked softly. "When do we open it?"

Julian touched the heavy paper inside his briefcase. "We open it tonight. With the girls."
