Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

"Hello, Arthur," Rose's voice echoed, recorded in the final days of her life, her words chillingly clear. "If you are watching this screen, it means you are standing at the altar, trying to marry Vanessa with the money you stole from my children."
The crowd erupted into stunned gasps. Guests stood up from their seats, phones immediately raised to record the unbelievable scene unfolding before them.
Arthur rushed toward the AV booth at the side of the lawn, screaming at the technicians. "Turn it off! Cut the power! Cut the damn power!"
"Don't move, Mr. Montgomery," Federal Agent Marcus Reed said, stepping into Arthur’s path and displaying his gold badge. "Touch that equipment and you will be charged with obstruction of justice."
The video continued. The screen displayed crisp, high-resolution scans of the toxicological reports, side-by-side with text messages between Arthur and Vanessa:
Arthur: The dose needs to be higher. She’s taking too long to fade.
Vanessa: Make sure Harrison adjusts the death certificate to say kidney failure. The wedding deposit is due next week.
The crowd gasped in utter horror. Several prominent socialites covered their mouths, tears springing to their eyes as the horrifying reality swept through the audience.
Rose's voice returned over the speakers, calm, beautiful, and triumphant:
"You thought I was weak, Arthur. You thought because I was dying, I couldn't protect my daughters. But every dollar you spent today was drawn from Montgomery Shipping Holdings—a company where my daughters own 51% of the controlling stock. You are officially terminated as Chief Executive Officer. And as of this moment, your assets are frozen by federal order."
Arthur turned back to the crowd, his eyes wild, his hair disheveled, looking like a cornered animal. "It's a lie! It's a deepfake! She was crazy! She was a sick, crazy woman!"
"She wasn't crazy, Arthur," I said, stepping right up to the altar, inches from his face. "She was a mother protecting her children from a monster."
Agent Reed stepped forward, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs. "Arthur Montgomery, you are under arrest for the murder of Rose Miller-Montgomery, grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Vanessa let out a blood-curdling shriek as two female federal officers approached her, grabbing her arms. "Get your hands off me! I didn't do anything! It was all him! He told me she was already dying!"
"Save it for the grand jury, Ms. Vance," the officer replied, snapping handcuffs around her wrists over her white lace bridal sleeves.
As the federal agents forced Arthur to his knees right on top of the bed of white wedding roses, the crowd watched in total, stunned silence. The man who had sat proudly in his tailored gray suit six days earlier was now weeping, begging, and screaming as the steel cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
Before they dragged him away toward the waiting police cruisers, Arthur looked up at his eldest daughter one last time.

Lucy looked down at him, her face calm, peaceful, and entirely devoid of fear.
"Goodbye, Arthur," she said quietly.
