Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Vipers

The takeover of Sullivan Global Logistics was a massive victory, but victory in Chicago’s corporate world always invited bloodier retribution.

By the end of her first week as CEO, Lana had completely purged the company’s corrupt board, appointed honest executives, and launched a multi-million-dollar charity initiative for injured dock workers. The press hailed her as the “Merciful Matron of the Docks.”

However, the threat of the Iron Vipers loomed like a dark cloud.

The Russian cartel had lost forty million dollars in failed bribes and lost port access due to Lana’s legal purge. Their ruthless leader, Nikolai Volkov—a sociopathic crime lord known for leaving no survivors—had personally taken over operations in Chicago.

It was 9:00 PM on a rain-slicked Thursday.

Lana was working late in her corner office on the thirty-second floor. The city lights below twinkled through the rain-streaked glass. Brennan’s security team was stationed outside her door, but inside, the room was quiet.

Brennan walked into her office carrying two plates of gourmet pasta from a nearby Italian bistro. He had shed his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up, revealing muscular forearms lined with faint battle scars.

“You need to eat, Lana,” Brennan said, placing a plate on her desk. “You’ve been staring at shipping manifests for fourteen hours.”

Lana leaned back in her leather chair, rubbing her tired eyes. “If I miss a single loophole, Volkov’s men will find a way to smuggle illegal cargo through our South Side terminal. I won't let my husband’s company be used for blood money.”

Brennan sat on the edge of her desk, looking down at her with a mix of fierce admiration and growing affection.

Over the past three weeks, their relationship had subtly evolved. They were no longer just a mob boss and a nurse paying off an old debt. They had become partners. They shared late-night dinners, discussed corporate strategy, and found a deep, quiet solace in each other’s presence.

For the first time in years, Brennan found himself looking forward to coming home—because home meant Lana.

“Volkov is getting desperate,” Brennan warned gently. “My intelligence sources tell me he’s losing control of his territory because he can't deliver on his port promises. A desperate predator is dangerous, Lana.”

Lana reached out, her fingers lightly touching Brennan’s hand. The contact was warm, sending a quiet electric thrill through both of them.

“I’m not afraid, Brennan,” Lana said softly, looking into his eyes. “Not when I have you by my side.”

Brennan looked down at her hand, then reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. His touch was incredibly tender for a man whose hands had commanded an empire of violence.

“I swore I’d protect you to settle a debt,” Brennan murmured, his voice dropping to a low, husky whisper. “But somewhere along the way, Lana... it stopped being about the debt.”

Lana’s breath hitched. She stepped closer to him, her heart beating fast. “Brennan—”

Suddenly, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the corner office shattered into a million exploding shards!

CRASH!

The deafening crack of a high-powered sniper rifle echoed across the night air!

A bullet tore through the air, missing Lana’s head by inches and embedding itself into the oak wall behind her!

In a fraction of a second, Brennan’s instincts took over. He tackled Lana to the floor, covering her body with his own as a second bullet shattered the marble desk above them!

“SNIPER!” Brennan roared into his lapel microphone. “FLOOR THIRTY-TWO! COVER THE WINDOWS!”

Sparks flew, alarms blared, and broken glass rained down around them. Brennan held Lana tight against his chest, shielding her completely as his security team rushed into the room with heavy tactical shields, deploying smoke grenades to block the sniper’s line of sight.

Lana clung to Brennan’s shirt, her heart pounding frantically, but as she looked up into his fierce, protective face, she saw no panic in his eyes—only a cold, apocalyptic fury.

Nikolai Volkov had made the fatal mistake of trying to take the woman Brennan Hayes loved.
