Chapter 3 - The Deployment Line

Two days later, Ryan called via a secure video link from his training site. His face was smudged with field dirt, his eyes exhausted, but the moment he saw me and Ava on the screen, his expression softened completely.

"Hey, my beautiful girls," he breathed, leaning closer to his camera. "How are you holding up, Chloe? How’s my little Ava?"

"She's gaining weight, Ryan. She has your nose," I smiled, though the exhaustion in my own voice was hard to mask.

Ryan’s smile faded slightly, his sharp instincts kicking in. "Chloe, what’s wrong? I saw your text about changing the base housing passes. Did something happen with your mom?"

I didn't sugarcoat it. I told him everything—the $2,000 text hours after birth, the break-in, the threats, and the social media smear campaign. As I spoke, I watched Ryan’s jaw clench until the muscles stood out like granite. The warmth in his eyes turned into a freezing, lethal focus.

"She said what to you?" Ryan asked, his voice dropping an octave.

"She asked if I thought you could protect me from them," I replied quietly.

Ryan took a deep breath, controlling his anger with the discipline of a seasoned soldier. "Listen to me, Chloe. I’m stuck here for another two weeks because of this evaluation, and it kills me that I’m not there to throw them off that property myself. But you are a Captain in the United States Army. You are stronger than both of them combined. You don't give them another dime, you don't give them another second of your time. If they step foot near our quarters again, you call base security immediately. I'll handle the command side from here to make sure no one bothers you."

Hearing his validation was the final anchor I needed. I wasn't an isolated mother drowning in guilt anymore; I was part of a fortress.
