Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Judge Henderson’s expression transformed from neutral to thunderous as the recording finished playing. She leaned over her bench, her eyes locking onto Janet and Clara like laser sights.
"Petitioner," the judge said, her voice dangerously quiet. "Did you or did you not state to your daughter Clara that this legal action was intended to force a financial settlement?"
Janet turned pale, her confident facade crumbling instantly. "Your Honor, my daughter Chloe has abandoned her family! She has all this money and—"
"Silence!" Judge Henderson slammed her gavel down, the sound echoing like a gunshot. "I have rarely seen such an egregious abuse of the family court system. You have weaponized a newborn child and attempted to defame a serving officer of the United States Army for the sole purpose of lining your own pockets."
The judge turned her attention to the paperwork in front of her. "The petition for grandparent visitation is denied with prejudice. Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent, non-expiring restraining order against both Janet Vance and Clara Vance. You are to maintain a minimum distance of five hundred yards from Chloe, her husband, her child, their residence, and their place of duty."
Judge Henderson wasn't finished. She looked at the prosecutor sitting in the back of the room. "I am also forwarding this case file to the District Attorney's office for a formal review of criminal extortion and filing fraudulent court documents. Get out of my courtroom."

Janet slumped into her chair, covering her face as her lawyer hurriedly packed his briefcase, clearly realizing he had picked the wrong fight. Clara began to wail openly, realizing that not only was there no money coming, but criminal charges were now a very real possibility.
I stood up, adjusting my uniform jacket. I didn't look back at them as Ryan and I walked out of the courtroom doors into the bright afternoon sun.
