Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Face-Off

The morning of the hearing was crisp and clear. I wore my Class A dress uniform—not out of pride, but as a deliberate statement of my stability, my duty, and the absolute authority they had tried to dismantle. Ryan walked beside me in his dress uniform, his presence imposing and unyielding.
Janet and Clara were already sitting at the petitioner's table with their lawyer, a slick man who looked increasingly uncomfortable as he watched Ryan and me walk in. Janet glared at my uniform, her mouth twisting into a bitter line, while Clara refused to look me in the eye, staring intently at her chipped fingernails.
The judge, an experienced family law veteran named Judge Henderson, took her seat and wasted no time. "We are here today regarding a petition for grandparent visitation filed by Janet Vance. Petitioner, present your case."
Janet’s lawyer stood up, attempting to paint a picture of a distraught grandmother alienated from her grandchild by a cold, militarily rigid daughter. He brought up the Facebook posts and the alleged "erratic behavior" during the home visit.
Judge Henderson listened with an expressionless face before turning to Eleanor. "Defense response?"
Eleanor stood up calmly. "Your Honor, this petition is not about a grandmother's love. It is a calculated attempt at financial extortion disguised as familial concern. We submit into evidence five years of financial records showing the respondent has been the sole financial safety net for the petitioner and her other daughter, totaling nearly one hundred thousand dollars."
Janet’s lawyer jumped up. "Objection! Financial matters are irrelevant to visitation!"

"It becomes relevant," Eleanor said, her voice ringing out clearly, "when the visitation petition is used as leverage to extort funds. We submit Exhibit C: an audio recording of the petitioner’s co-conspirator, Clara, admitting that the entire lawsuit was manufactured to force a financial settlement."
Eleanor played the recording of Clara’s frantic phone call. The sound of Clara’s voice admitting their plot echoed through the silent courtroom.
