The day Ryan came home, the dark cloud that had been hovering over my house finally dissipated. I stood at the base terminal, holding Ava in a front carrier, watching the rows of soldiers march off the transport buses.
When Ryan spotted us, he broke into a run, dropping his gear bag on the tarmac. He threw his arms around both of us, burying his face in my neck, his tears warm against my skin. He smelled of dust, sweat, and home.
"I've got you," he whispered fiercely, holding us so tight I could feel his heartbeat. "I'm so sorry I wasn't here, Chloe. But I'm here now. No one touches my family."

We sat on the couch together, reviewing Eleanor’s final strategy for the upcoming court hearing. For the first time in weeks, I didn't feel like a defensive unit holding the line alone. The reinforcements had arrived.
