Chapter 7 - The Unearthing of Truth

Back at the Chestnut Hill estate, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Dominic entered his private library to find Claire waiting for him, pacing nervously near the fireplace. Sophie was fast asleep on a velvet sofa near the bookshelves, clutching a stuffed bear the housekeepers had brought her.
"What happened at the meeting?" Claire asked urgently, rushing toward him.
"Rossi is pressing the commission," Dominic said, removing his suit jacket and tossing it over a chair. "He believes your center holds a ledger that could destroy his empire or enrich his family."
"I told you, there are no ledgers there!" Claire said desperately. "It’s just a children's center!"
Dominic walked over to the sofa and looked down at Sophie’s sleeping face. He looked at her dark hair, her delicate features, and the small, distinct shape of her jawline.
Suddenly, a realization hit him like a physical blow—a piece of the puzzle that had been hiding in plain sight all along.
Dominic turned around slowly, looking straight into Claire’s eyes.
"Danielle Carter didn't die of a congenital heart failure, did she?" Dominic asked softly.
Claire gasped, taking a step back, her hand flying to her mouth. "Dominic... I..."
"Tell me the truth, Claire," Dominic demanded, his voice dangerously quiet. "My father’s note said: 'Go see what I was protecting.' He wasn't talking about the building. He was talking about Sophie."
Tears welled up in Claire’s eyes. She sank into a leather armchair, burying her face in her hands. Her shoulders shook as five years of buried fear and grief came pouring out.
"Danielle was murdered," Claire sobbed quietly. "She found out that Apex Logistics was being used by Marcus Rossi to traffic illegal firearms and human cargo through the Boston docks. She copied the encrypted manifests onto a flash drive and was going to hand it over to the federal prosecutor."
Dominic listened, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth felt like they might shatter.
"Rossi found out," Claire continued, her voice trembling. "He had one of his corrupt doctors contaminate her heart medication. They made it look like a sudden heart attack. But before Danielle died, she gave me the flash drive... and she told me the truth about who Sophie's father was."
Dominic took a deep, steadying breath. "Who was he?"
Claire raised her head, looking at Dominic with deep, aching sorrow.
"Her father was your younger brother, Julian," Claire whispered.
The room went deathly silent.
Dominic felt as though the floor beneath him had opened up into an abyss.
Julian Vale. His younger brother. The wild, artistic, gentle soul who had refused to join the family crime business. Julian had died five years ago in what the family had believed was an accidental car crash off the coastal cliffs of Gloucester.
"Julian... and Danielle?" Dominic breathed, his voice barely a whisper.
"They met in secret," Claire explained tears streaming down her face. "Julian knew your father would never allow him to marry an ordinary girl from South Boston. They were planning to run away together. Danielle was pregnant with Sophie when Julian’s car went off the road."
Dominic closed his eyes. The memory of Julian’s death came rushing back. The shattered car, the closed coffin, the hollow look in his father’s eyes.
"It wasn't an accident, was it?" Dominic asked, his voice shaking with a rare, terrifying emotion. "Julian's crash."
"It was Marcus Rossi," Claire said bitterly. "Rossi found out Julian was trying to pull Danielle out of Apex Logistics. Rossi sabotaged Julian's brakes to keep the Vale family dependent on his shipping routes. And when your father finally discovered the truth years later, Julian was gone, Danielle was dead... and Sophie was all that was left of his son."
Dominic turned his gaze back to the small girl sleeping on the sofa.
Sophie wasn't just a random orphan. She was his niece. His brother’s blood. His own flesh and blood.
Vincent Vale hadn't just been donating money out of guilt; he had been hiding his only living granddaughter from the assassin who had murdered his youngest son.
Dominic walked over to the sofa, his massive frame shaking slightly. He dropped to his knees beside the sleeping child and gently touched her soft, dark hair.
"She’s Julian’s daughter," Dominic whispered, a single tear slipping down his cheek—the first tear he had shed since he was a boy.
"Your father spent his last four years keeping Rossi from finding out she existed," Claire said gently, coming up behind him and resting a hand on his shoulder. "Because he knew if Rossi realized who Sophie was, he would kill her to eliminate any future heir to the Vale estate."
Dominic stood up. The grief on his face instantly burned away, replaced by an absolute, divine rage.
"Noah!" Dominic roared toward the door.
May you like
Noah burst into the room seconds later, weapon drawn. "Sir!"
"Mobilize every soldier we have," Dominic commanded, his voice thunderous. "Lock down the city. We are hunting Marcus Rossi tonight."
