Chapter 9 - The Trial of Heart

The news swept through the Boston underworld like wildfire. The Rossi family was dismantled overnight, its assets absorbed into Vale Holdings, and the commission formally recognized Dominic Vale as the undisputed sovereign of the city's waterfront.

Yet, inside the grand mansion in Chestnut Hill, no victory celebrations were held.

Three days after the assault on Pier 4, Dominic sat in his private office, staring at a stack of legal documents Noah had prepared.

The door opened softly, and Claire stepped inside. She was dressed in her own clothes now, carrying a small travel bag.

"The police confirmed Marcus Rossi’s death was ruled as a mob internal hit," Claire said quietly, stopping near the desk. "The threat to Harbor House is gone."

Dominic looked up at her. He looked worn, darker, as if the violence of that night still clung to his clothes like soot.

"Yes," Dominic said flatly. "You and Sophie are completely safe now. I have established a permanent, clean trust fund for Harbor House. Ten million dollars. It will cover all operating expenses, mortgage debts, and staff salaries for the next thirty years. You will never have to worry about money again."

Claire stared at the document he pushed across the desk, but she didn't pick it up.

"And what about Sophie?" Claire asked, her voice tight with emotion.

Dominic looked away, staring out the floor-to-ceiling window at the foggy gardens below.

"She belongs with you," Dominic said softly, his tone laced with a profound, quiet sorrow. "You raised her. You loved her when she had no one. I am... what I am, Claire. A crime lord. A murderer. I cannot be a father to Julian’s daughter. It would ruin her life."

"Dominic..."

"I have prepared full legal adoption papers that guarantee your exclusive custody," Dominic continued, his voice straining to remain emotionless. "You will be safe. I will watch over both of you from a distance. A car is waiting downstairs to take you back to Dorchester."

Claire walked slowly toward his desk. She reached out and grabbed the legal documents, but instead of signing them, she tore them directly down the middle, throwing the pieces into the wastebasket.

Dominic snapped his head around, shocked. "Claire, what are you doing?"

"You stupid, arrogant man," Claire said, tears pouring down her cheeks, though her eyes blazed with fierce anger. "You think money and security guards are what Sophie needs?"

"I am a dangerous man, Claire!" Dominic yelled, standing up, his fists clenched. "Did you not see what I did to Rossi’s enforcers in your hallway? Did you not see the blood on my hands? I belong in the shadows!"

"Sophie doesn't care about your shadows!" Claire shouted back, stepping right up to his desk, defying him just as she had at Saint Augustine’s Chapel. "She doesn't see a mob boss, Dominic! She sees the man who held her hand at a funeral when she was afraid! She sees her uncle!"

Dominic stood frozen, his breath hitching in his chest.

"She lost her mother. She lost her father," Claire whispered, her tone shifting from anger to a heartbreaking plea. "And you lost your brother. Are you really going to let Marcus Rossi win by keeping this family broken forever?"

Before Dominic could answer, the door opened a crack.

Sophie stood in the hallway, holding her favorite wooden bird. She looked at Claire crying, then at Dominic’s rigid, pained expression.

She walked into the room silently, her tiny shoes making soft clicking sounds on the hardwood floor. She walked right past Claire and stopped beside Dominic’s chair.

She reached up and grabbed two of his long fingers, wrapping her tiny hand around them—just as she had done on the day of his father's funeral.

"Don't be sad, Mr. Quiet," Sophie whispered, looking up at him with her large, innocent brown eyes—Julian’s eyes. "You can come live in our house. Claire makes really good hot milk."

Dominic looked down at his niece. The heavy, impenetrable wall of ice he had built around his heart for thirty years cracked, shattered, and completely collapsed.

Dominic dropped to his knees, pulling the little girl into his arms, burying his face in her soft hair as quiet, heavy sobs wracked his broad shoulders. Sophie wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, holding him tight.

Claire stood nearby, tears streaming down her face, a soft, beautiful smile breaking through her grief as she placed her hand on Dominic’s back.
