Chapter 4 - The Beacon Hill Sanctuary

The Harrison Estate on Beacon Hill was a monumental wrought-iron fortress of brick, limestone, and glass, built during the Golden Age of Boston maritime wealth.
Inside, the grand entrance hall featured a sweeping marble staircase, crystal chandeliers that cast warm, diamond light across polished mahogany floors, and roaring stone fireplaces that kept the vast mansion as warm as a summer afternoon.
For Maya, Leo, and Sarah, stepping through the front doors felt like walking into a glowing, magical castle from a fairy tale book.
A team of four private nurses in clean blue uniforms stepped forward to gently escort Sarah and baby Ella to the master guest suite, while two staff members led Leo to a spacious, carpeted playroom filled with warm light, soft leather sofas, and every toy imaginable.
"Where is Ethan?" Maya asked, holding her taped purple backpack tightly against her chest.
"He's in the pediatric wing on the second floor, sweetheart," Richard said, stepping beside her and offering his hand. "Would you like to see him?"
Maya took his hand, her small fingers warm against his broad palm.
They walked up the grand staircase and down a quiet, carpeted corridor lined with historical oil paintings. At the end of the hall, two glass doors opened into a state-of-the-art medical suite designed specifically for six-year-old Ethan.
The room had soft blue walls painted with starry night skies, a comfortable adjustable bed, monitoring equipment disguised behind carved wooden panels, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the illuminated gardens below.
Ethan was sitting up in bed, wearing warm flannel pajamas. A small, lightweight oxygen line rested beneath his nose, but his face was bright, his blue eyes sparkling the moment he saw Maya step through the door.
"Maya!" Ethan cried out, his weak voice filled with pure, unfiltered joy.
He reached out his small arms. Maya ran across the room, climbing carefully onto the edge of his bed, being mindful not to touch the delicate tubes connected to his arm.
"You brought my robot!" Ethan squealed as Maya set the toy on his lap.
"I told you I was going to fix things," Maya smiled, adjusting his blanket over his shoulders.
Richard stood near the doorway, leaning against the frame, his heart swelling with a warmth he hadn't felt since his wife had passed away four years ago. For the first time in years, the cold, sterile mansion felt like a real home.
Suddenly, Colin Dray stepped into the doorway behind Richard, holding a silver tray with two small glass medicine cups containing Ethan’s nightly pediatric liquid antibiotics.
"Mr. Harrison," Colin said smoothly, his smile tight and practiced. "It's nine o'clock. Ethan needs his specialized pulmonary dose before he sleeps."
"Ah, thank you, Colin," Richard said, stepping forward. "Leave it on the table."
"Allow me, sir," Colin offered, walking over to the bedside table. He set the tray down, his eyes darting subtly toward Maya, who was currently laughing with Ethan as they made the toy robot dance across the bed.
With a swift, invisible motion of his sleeve, Colin dropped three tiny, transparent droplets of an unlabelled, colorless industrial toxin directly into the blue liquid antibiotic cup—a compound designed to trigger acute respiratory paralysis within thirty minutes of ingestion.
"Here you are, little guy," Colin said smoothly, picking up the cup and handing it to Richard. "Time for your medicine."
Richard took the cup, holding it out toward his son. "Come on, Ethan. Drink up so you can play with Maya tomorrow."
Ethan turned his head away, frowning. "It smells funny, Daddy. It smells like sour bleach."
"Nonsense, champ," Richard smiled, moving the cup closer. "It's the same berry flavor you take every night."
Maya paused. She leaned closer, her sharp, trained senses—honed by years of living in dilapidated apartments with leaking gas pipes and chemical mold—instinctively reacting to the faint, metallic scent rising from the glass.
She reached out her hand and knocked the glass cup directly out of Richard’s fingers!
CRASH!

The glass shattered against the hardwood floor, spilling the dark blue liquid across the floorboards.
Where the liquid touched the polyurethane wood finish, small, white sizzling bubbles instantly began to form!
