Chapter 9 - The Maya Jenkins Foundation

Two years later.

On a crisp October morning, a massive crowd of city officials, doctors, news crews, and families gathered outside a state-of-the-art five-story medical facility on Michigan Avenue in South Boston.

Above the grand glass entrance, glistening steel letters spelled out a new name:

THE MAYA JENKINS PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY & TRAUMA CENTER

The facility—built with a fifty-million-dollar endowment from Harrison Global—was designed specifically to provide free, top-tier emergency medical care, physical therapy, and spinal surgeries to children from low-income families across New England.

At the podium on the ribbon-cutting stage stood nine-year-old Maya.

She looked confident, radiant, and strong, wearing a navy blazer over her dress. Standing on her right was seven-year-old Ethan, who held her hand tightly, completely healthy and thriving. On her left stood six-year-old Leo, who was bouncing on his toes, wearing his youth soccer team uniform.

Richard and Sarah stood directly behind them, looking at the children with boundless pride.

Maya stepped up to the microphone. The flashbulbs of fifty news cameras exploded in a haze of white light, but she didn't flinch. She looked out over the crowd of thousands of city residents who had gathered to celebrate the opening.

"Two years ago," Maya spoke into the microphone, her clear, young voice echoing across the plaza, "my brother Leo needed help, and my family had no money. When I saw Ethan on the floor at the airport, nobody moved because they were scared."

She paused, looking down at Ethan, who gave her a bright, encouraging nod.

"My dad used to tell me that being brave isn't about not being scared," Maya continued, her voice rising with powerful inspiration. "It's about moving your feet when someone else can't breathe. This hospital is here so that no child ever has to freeze on a sidewalk again, and no mother ever has to cry because she can't buy medicine."

The entire plaza erupted into a thunderous, deafening standing ovation! Mayor Thomas, city council members, and pediatric doctors stood up, clapping wildly as Maya took a large pair of gold scissors and cut the thick red ribbon spanning the entrance.
