Chapter 5 - The Chemical Trap

Silence slammed into the bedroom like a physical blow.
Richard froze, staring down at the sizzling, bubbling stain on his twenty-thousand-dollar heart-pine floorboards.
Colin Dray backed up a step, his face going pale, his hands trembling slightly inside his suit pockets. "What... what an clumsy child! She knocked over the medicine!"
"Look at the floor," Maya said, her voice small but piercingly clear, pointing her tiny finger at the white chemical foam rising from the wood. "Medicine doesn't make wood smoke."
Richard dropped to his knees. He pulled out his fountain pen and dipped the tip into the spilled liquid. Within five seconds, the polished gold nib began to tarnish into a dark, corroded brown.
Richard stood up slowly.
The warm, loving father vanished in a single fraction of a second. In his place stood the terrifying, ruthless billionaire whose ruthless corporate battles had crushed multi-billion-dollar syndicates.
His slate-gray eyes turned into shards of liquid ice as he locked his gaze onto Colin Dray.
"Lock the doors," Richard said softly.
Two heavy-set, armed estate security officers stepped into the room from the hallway, slamming the heavy mahogany doors shut and turning the brass lock with a heavy CLICK.
"Mr. Harrison!" Colin shrieked, his voice rising an octave in sheer panic. "This is absurd! The pharmacy must have compounded the dosage incorrectly! I just brought it up from the courier!"
Richard walked slowly toward his assistant, his posture so imposing that Colin shrank back against the wall until he had nowhere left to run.
Richard reached out, grabbed Colin by his silk necktie, and yanked him forward until their faces were inches apart.
"You brought that cup directly from the kitchen, Colin," Richard whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, terrifying quietness. "I watched you on the security monitor in the hallway."
He signaled to the lead security officer. "Take his phone. Run a full forensic extraction on his encrypted messaging apps right now."
The security guard grabbed Colin’s wrist, pulling the satellite phone from his pocket. Within ninety seconds, the high-grade military decryption software running on the guard's tablet bypassed the phone's security code.
A series of text messages flared across the tablet screen in bold red text:
VICTORIA HARRISON (8:42 PM): Is it done? COLIN DRAY (8:45 PM): Administering the compound now. The street girl will be blamed.
Richard read the screen.
A low, terrifying growl built deep in his chest. He shoved Colin against the wall with such force that the framed painting beside him shook.
"My stepmother," Richard hissed, his fingers tightening on Colin’s collar. "You tried to murder my six-year-old son to protect a corporate board seat?"
"Mr. Harrison... please!" Colin begged, tears of terror streaming down his face as his knees gave out beneath him. "She promised me ten million dollars! She said she would destroy my family if I didn't help her!"
Richard turned to his chief security officer.
"Call the United States Attorney General," Richard commanded flatly. "Tell him I am invoking Article 9 of the Federal Anti-Racketeering Act. I want Victoria Harrison and Colin Dray arrested for attempted murder and treason against the estate before sunrise."
The security guards dragged the weeping, screaming assistant out of the room, slamming the door shut behind them.
Richard stood in the center of the quiet room, his chest heaving, his hands shaking violently as the reality of what had almost happened washed over him.
He looked over at the bed.
Ethan was holding Maya’s hand tightly, leaning his head against her shoulder, while Maya gently rubbed his back, soothing him with quiet, soft words.
If Maya hadn't been in that room... if she hadn't noticed the faint smell... Ethan would be dead.
Richard walked over to the bed. He sank down onto his knees beside the two children, covering his face with his hands, weeping silently in profound, overwhelming awe.
He looked up at the seven-year-old girl in the patched jeans.
"Maya," Richard sobbed softly. "You saved him again."

Maya looked down at the billionaire, offering a sweet, quiet smile. "That's what family does, right?"
Richard pulled both children into his broad, warm arms, holding them as if he would never let them go again.
