Chapter 3 - The Fracturing

The gala was the social event of the season, a black-tie affair held in the grand ballroom of the city’s oldest hotel. It was where the elite came to be seen, and where reputations were forged or destroyed.
I arrived on Julian’s arm, wearing a gown of dark, midnight blue. I felt like a different person. I wasn't the wife who lived for someone else's approval; I was a surgeon, a woman who understood exactly where to make the incision.
Across the room, I saw them. Connor looked immaculate, his smile practiced, but I noticed his gaze constantly darting toward the VIP lounge where the board members were gathered. Melinda looked like a ghost. She was pale, her eyes rimmed with red, and she was clutching a clutch bag like a weapon.
As the evening progressed, the tension became palpable. Connor was working the room, trying to secure a new round of funding for his struggling firm. He was selling the image of the "Family Man."
I moved through the crowd with precision. I didn't go to him. I went to the people who funded him.
"Dr. Sinclair," the board chair, Melinda’s father, said, smiling as I approached. "Wonderful to see you. I hear the new pediatric wing is thriving under your direction."
"It is," I said, my voice warm. "But I've been concerned about some of the... administrative oversight. I think it’s important for the board to have full transparency regarding the personal investments of those who have been given preferential access to the hospital's private funds."
The chair’s smile faltered. "What are you implying?"
"I’m not implying anything," I said, handing him a thin, encrypted envelope. "I’m presenting facts. It seems there are some, shall we say, irregularities in the way funds have been diverted to support private real estate developments. Projects that are, interestingly enough, tied to Mr. Fleming."
I walked away before he could respond.
Across the room, Connor was laughing, his arm around a major donor. He had no idea the floor was vanishing beneath him.
Suddenly, I saw Melinda bolt from the room. She looked panicked, her hand covering her mouth. I followed her, my heels clicking on the marble floor.
I found her in the ladies' lounge, splashing cold water on her face. She looked up and saw me in the mirror.
"You," she whispered.
"He’s going to lose it all, Melinda," I said, leaning against the doorframe. "Everything he built on lies. The house, the funding, the prestige. Do you really want to go down with him?"
"You don't know what it's like," she cried, tears streaming down her face. "He threatened me. He said he’d take the baby. He said he’d ruin my family’s reputation if I didn't do what he said."
"Is he the father?" I asked, my voice soft.
She froze. The silence in the room was absolute.

"Answer me, Melinda."
She didn't speak, but she didn't have to. The look of sheer terror in her eyes told me everything.
