Chapter 5 - The Witness

The trial was a media circus. Connor appeared, shorn of his arrogance, looking small and defeated in a cheap suit. He didn't look at me when I took the stand.
My testimony was brief, factual, and damning. I didn't dwell on the emotional abuse; I focused on the financial manipulation, the coercion of the staff, and the breach of hospital ethics.
When I stepped down, I saw Melinda in the gallery. She looked tired, but for the first time in a year, she looked present.
As I walked out of the courthouse, I found Julian waiting for me.
"You did well," he said.
"It’s done," I replied.
"Not quite," he said, taking my hand. "There’s one more thing."
He led me to a quiet corner of the plaza, away from the cameras. "I found out who the father is," he said. "It’s not Connor. It’s an old college friend of Melinda’s. Connor knew it, and he used it to control her, to keep her in the marriage—or the arrangement, whatever it was—to keep the money flowing."
I looked at him, stunned. "Why would she let him?"

"Fear," Julian said. "He’s a predator, Kirsten. He finds people in vulnerable positions, and he exploits them. You were just the first."
I realized then that the "win" wasn't just about Connor losing. It was about the cycle being broken.
