Chapter 9 - The Horizon

Months turned into a year. The memory of Connor Fleming faded into a distant, unpleasant footnote in my history.
My work flourished. The research projects we started were showing groundbreaking results. The hospital was thriving.
One weekend, Julian and I went away to the coast. It was the first time I had truly taken a vacation in years. We sat on the beach, watching the waves crash against the rocks.
"You seem different," he said.
"I am," I said, looking out at the endless horizon. "I'm finally home."
"In yourself?"

The peace was profound. I didn't need anything else. I had built a life on my own terms, and that was the greatest victory of all.
