Chapter 4 - The Recovery

Three days later, the rain over Boston had cleared, giving way to a brilliant, crisp spring morning that lit up the windows of the private recovery room at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Sarah Mercer—a brilliant, warm-eyed woman who had completely flushed the synthetic paralyzing toxin from Lily’s bloodstream—stood at the foot of the bed, reviewing a series of clear brain scans on her tablet.

"The drug was a modified curare derivative, Mr. Blackwood," Dr. Mercer explained softly to Robert. "It mimicked brain-death symptoms while keeping her nervous system completely trapped in a paralyzed state. Had she remained on that silver pump for another forty-eight hours, the cellular damage would have been irreversible."

Robert stood near the window, wearing a simple sweater and slacks, looking noticeably different from the ruthless billionaire who had walked into Mass General three days ago. The cold, impenetrable shell he had worn for years had been shattered.

"And now?" Robert asked, his voice rough.

"Now," Dr. Mercer smiled warmly, "she just needs sleep. Real, natural sleep."

On the bed, Lily moved.

A soft, long breath escaped her lips. Her blonde eyelashes fluttered, casting small shadows across her pale cheeks under the morning sun.

Robert was at her side in an instant, taking her hand in his. "Lily? Sweetheart?"

Lily blinked slowly, her bright hazel eyes slowly focusing on the ceiling, then tracking sideways until they locked onto her father's face.

"Dad?" she whispered, her voice raspy and thin as dry paper.

"I'm here, baby," Robert sobbed, pressing his forehead against her hand, letting his tears spill freely onto her fingers. "I'm right here. You're safe."

Lily squeezed his fingers feebly. "Where... where is Joey?"

Robert lifted his head, a soft, radiant smile breaking across his face. He turned toward the armchair near the window.

Joey was sitting in the corner, fast asleep, wearing a clean pair of trousers and a warm fleece jacket Robert’s staff had purchased for him two days ago. His patched backpack sat neatly beside his chair, and his dirty Red Sox cap rested on his lap.

"He's right there, sweetie," Robert whispered, kissing Lily’s forehead. "He saved your life."

Lily looked at the sleeping boy, her eyes filling with warm, quiet tears. "He told me he would come," she murmured weakly. "When I was trapped in the dark... I could hear his voice through the wall. He promised he wouldn't let them keep me."
