Chapter 5 - The War for Beacon Hill

While Lily rested comfortably in the private wing of Boston Children's, a storm of unprecedented proportions was raging through the financial district of Boston.
Julian Vance—the billionaire head of Vance Biometrics and the primary architect behind the conspiracy to absorb the Blackwood estate—sat in his mahogany-paneled office on the sixty-fifth floor of the Prudential Center, staring at his computer screens in absolute, hysterical terror.
Hale Global and the Blackwood Financial Group had launched a joint, ruthless hostile takeover of Vance Biometrics at the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange.
Every bank, every institutional investor, and every offshore creditor holding Vance’s debt had been bought out by Robert Blackwood within seventy-two hours.
The double doors to Julian Vance’s executive office flew open.
Robert Blackwood walked in.
He didn't bring police officers. He didn't bring journalists. He was accompanied only by Marcus Vance and two senior federal prosecutors carrying heavy leather briefcases.
Julian stood up from his desk, his face pale as paper, his hands trembling violently as he gripped his gold fountain pen. "Robert... listen to me! Rebecca lied to you! She came to me with the plan! I had nothing to do with poisoning your daughter—"
Robert walked to the center of the room, standing before the massive glass window overlooking the city. He looked at Julian with an icy, clinical detachment that was far more terrifying than rage.
"Julian," Robert said softly. "As of nine o'clock this morning, I own your company. I own your house in Martha's Vineyard. I own your penthouses in London and Paris. And I hold seventy-five million dollars of your personal defaulted debt."
Julian collapsed into his leather chair, tears of terror leaking down his face. "Please, Robert... leave me something! I have a family!"
"Did you think about my family when you paid Dr. Richardson to paralyze my daughter?" Robert asked, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
He stepped up to the desk, setting a single piece of paper down in front of Julian.
It was a full confession and surrender of all remaining personal assets, linked to an immediate guilty plea for attempted murder and corporate conspiracy.
"Sign it," Robert said flatly. "Or the federal prosecutors standing behind me will file RICO charges that will ensure you die in a maximum-security prison."
Julian looked at the paper, then looked at the cold, unyielding blue eyes of the man he had foolishly tried to destroy. With a shaking hand, he picked up his pen and signed his name at the bottom of the page.

Robert picked up the document, handed it to the prosecutors, and turned his back on Julian Vance forever.
"Take him away," Robert said softly, stepping out into the hallway, leaving the disgraced mogul to face the ruins of his life.
