Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

That evening, a grand campfire burned brightly in the stone pit near the ocean shore.
The sky above was a vast, breathtaking canopy of deep purple and velvet black, sprinkled with millions of twinkling stars. The sound of gentle waves rolling against the pebbles provided a rhythmic, soothing soundtrack to the night.
Joey, Lily, Robert, Sarah, and Joey’s uncle Thomas—a broad, warm-hearted man with calloused hands and a deep, booming laugh—sat around the fire roasting marshmallows on long wooden sticks.
Uncle Thomas raised his mug of hot chocolate toward Robert. "I still don't know how to thank you, Mr. Blackwood. My ironworks shop hired three new apprentices last week. We just signed a contract to restore the historic gates at Boston Common."
"You don't need to thank me, Thomas," Robert smiled warmly. "Your nephew did all the heavy lifting."
"He's a good boy," Thomas said softly, looking at Joey with immense pride. "His father would be so proud of him."
Joey looked down at his roasted marshmallow, his face glowing red under the firelight.
Lily reached over from her chair, grabbing Joey’s hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. "He's the best friend in the world."
Joey looked up at her, offering a bright, genuine smile. "I told you I'd always have your back, Lily."
Robert stood up from his seat, walking over to stand beside the two children. He reached into his pocket and pulled out two small, velvet jewelry boxes, handing one to Lily and one to Joey.
"What's this, Dad?" Lily asked, opening her box.
Inside lay a delicate, custom-crafted silver pendant shaped like a single koi fish with a tiny emerald eye.
Joey opened his box. Inside was an identical silver pendant, heavy and polished, hanging from a strong leather cord.
"I had these crafted from the silver keycard Rebecca used to access the private lab," Robert explained, his voice filled with deep, resonant emotion. "It was meant to be an instrument of destruction. But now, it stands as a symbol of life, truth, and unbroken loyalty."
Lily fastened the pendant around her neck, her eyes shining with tears of happiness. Joey slipped the leather cord over his head, letting the silver koi rest against his chest.

"Friends forever?" Lily asked, holding her pinky finger out toward Joey.
Joey wrapped his pinky finger around hers without hesitation. "Friends forever."
