Chapter 8 - The Summer of Light

Three months passed.

Summer arrived in full glory over the coast of Maine.

The Blackwood estate in Bar Harbor sat high on a rocky cliff overlooking the sparkling blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The air was cool, smelling of pine needles, wild roses, and salty sea spray.

Down on the private wooden dock extending into the calm bay, two children were laughing hysterically.

Lily—her health fully restored, her blonde hair bright and long, sporting blue dyed tips just as she had wanted before the tragedy—was standing at the edge of the dock holding a fishing rod.

Beside her stood Joey, wearing shorts, a life jacket, and his signature Red Sox cap, showing her how to cast a line into the deep water.

"No, Lily! You have to release the thumb button right when the hook swings forward!" Joey laughed, adjusting her wrists.

"I am releasing it!" Lily giggled, tossing the line wildly into the water, splashing a school of tiny minnows.

Up on the sweeping wraparound porch of the main house, Robert stood leaning against the wooden railing, holding a cup of fresh morning tea.

Standing beside him was Dr. Sarah Mercer, who had visited the estate for a routine follow-up check on Lily. She watched the children play on the dock with a soft, radiant smile.

"She’s completely healed, Robert," Sarah said softly, turning her clear green eyes toward him. "Not just physically. Her spirit is whole again."

"I know," Robert murmured, looking out at his daughter’s bright, echoing laughter. "For four years after Eleanor died, this house was a tomb, Sarah. I thought money and corporate power could protect us from pain. I was so busy building walls that I almost let monsters destroy my home from the inside."

"And now?" Sarah asked gently.

Robert turned to look at Sarah—a brilliant, kind, and courageous woman who had become a close friend and a gentle, steady presence in his life over the last few months.

"Now," Robert smiled, reaching out to gently take her hand, "I think we finally tear the walls down and let the sun in."

Sarah smiled warmly, her fingers intertwining with his as they stood together under the warm summer sky.
