The autumn air in Astoria, Queens, was crisp and smelled of roasting chestnuts from a street cart down on Steinway Street.
Claire sat on the wooden bench of a newly renovated neighborhood park, watching Lily chase a golden retriever puppy across the grass, her laughter ringing out bright and unburdened against the afternoon sky.
The Lockwood empire had imploded under the weight of federal racketeering charges, tax fraud investigations, and the massive public exposure of their corporate atrocities. "The foundation is officially registered," Nathaniel said softly, his voice warm. "The first wave of grants for single mothers fighting custody and legal battles goes out on Monday."
Claire took a sip of the coffee, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Good. Make sure the paperwork is clean. No loopholes."
"Ironclad," Nathaniel smiled, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close. "I learned my lesson about fine print."

Back in the apartment on the second floor, resting quietly on the shelf in Lily’s bedroom, was a very different kind of doll—a clean, stitched, brand-new stuffed rabbit that didn't hide secrets in its belly, didn't carry whispered warnings from the dark, and belonged entirely to a little girl who was finally free to grow up without fear.
